(CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER) — COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio public school students would be able to obtain credit for religious courses completed off campus under a bill passed earlier this year by the Ohio House.
House Bill 171 would allow students to leave campus during school hours to take religious courses, according to school board policy. Districts could grant up to two units of high school credit for courses evaluated similar to how credit for students who transfer from non-public schools is reviewed.
The credits could not replace required credits in core subjects such as English or social studies. Religious credit could only count as elective credit and students could not be excused from core subject classes to attend religious ones. Transportation would be the responsibility of the private entity, student or student's parents.
