Big Media darling promotes wife-beating

The same Muslim group pressuring universities across the country to cancel screenings of a film documenting Islamic abuse of women is distributing books calling for the abuse of women.

The point man for the Council on American-Islamic Relation’s campaign to silence the “Honor Diaries” documentary is also the point man for CAIR’s distribution of tens of thousands of copies of misogynistic books instructing Muslim men to, among other things, “beat” their wives.

That CAIR official is Ibrahim Hooper, national communications director and official spokesman for the Washington-based group. WND has learned that Hooper prominently displays in his Washington office at least one of the Islamic books that instructs Muslim men to strike their wives and to have sex with them whenever they desire. It is part of his personal library, and he is known to routinely refer to the book. He even proudly shows it to visitors.

Hooper recently appeared on Fox News to denounce “Honor Diaries” as an “Islamophobic” smear, while claiming to defend equal rights for Muslim women.

See the film some universities are afraid to show. “Honor Diaries” is available at WND’s Superstore.

“We condemn female genital mutilation. We condemn honor killings. We condemn any kind of abuse of Muslim women or women anywhere in the world. We’re on the record clearly on that,” Hooper said earlier this month in an interview with Fox’s Megyn Kelly.

“That’s not what this is about,” he added. “It’s about hijacking a legitimate issue in order to demonize Islam and marginalize Muslims, and that’s what it’s about.”

As WND reported Monday, one of the nine Muslim women featured in “Honor Diaries” says the systematic abuse of women in Muslim-majority countries is a “war against women” that amounts to the world’s “largest human rights” disaster.

Hooper heads CAIR’s campaign to distribute books on Islam to schools and mosques and libraries across the country. Some of the books clearly promote spousal abuse, including wife-beating, a felony throughout the United States.

“And as for those women whose ill-will you have reason to fear, admonish them [first]; then leave them alone in bed; then beat them; and if thereupon they pay you heed, do not seek to harm them,” states “The Message of the Qur’an” by Muhammad Asad, a book currently widely distributed by the communications department of CAIR.

The book also instructs men to have sex with their wives wherever and whenever “you may desire,” as if they were a “tilth” to be plowed.

In a recent press release, Hooper announced a CAIR campaign to distribute 100,000 copies of that same book, “The Message of the Qur’an,” which is published by The Book Foundation, a London-based organization connected to the radical Muslim Brotherhood. Hooper says the group plans to distribute a million copies of the book over 10 years.

CAIR used to distribute another book that called on Muslim men to “spank” women for “disloyalty” but abandoned it when the Virginia offices of its publisher and CAIR’s “partner” in the project, Amana Publications, were raided by federal agents after Sept. 11. The book, “The Meaning of the Holy Quran,” was also banned by the Los Angeles Unified School District after school officials received complaints that its author, Abdullah Yusuf Ali, referred to Jews as “apes” and “swine.”

However, this is the same book currently kept and referenced by Hooper in his office.

A recent video promoting “Islam for Journalists: A Primer on Covering Muslim Communities in America” – a handbook to prevent “bigoted and uninformed remarks about Islam” in the media – captures Hooper pulling a copy of Ali’s “The Meaning of the Holy Qur’an” off a book shelf in his office. He then puts on a pair of reading glasses and thumbs through it, as an English-speaking correspondent for a Saudi Arabian news network looks over his shoulder. The relevant clip starts at 2 minutes, 30 seconds into the video.

See the video:

Page 195 of Hooper’s book states: “As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them [first], [next], refuse to share their beds, [and last] spank them [lightly].” On the same page, Ali explains: “Some slight physical correction may be administered.”

The same book in Hooper’s office also promotes forced sex.

On Page 90 of “The Meaning of the Holy Quran,” it states: “Your wives are as a tilth unto you, so approach your tilth when or how you will” – to which Ali explains: “Sex is not a thing to be ashamed of. It is compared to a husbandman’s tilth; it is a serious affair to him; he sows the seed in order to reap the harvest. But he chooses his own time and mode of cultivation.”

Fight back against CAIR’s attack on First Amendment by making a contribution to WND’s “Legal Defense Fund.” Donations of $25 or more entitle you to free copy of “Muslim Mafia” – the book so devastating to CAIR the group is trying to ban it.

Ibn Warraq, a former Muslim and author, has noted that Ali’s book “makes grim reading as far as the position of women is concerned.”

Moreover, Hooper’s original book drive package, funded in part by a $500,000 donation from Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, included the book, “Gender Equity in Islam,” by Jamal Badawi, which justifies the beating of women by their husbands.

“There are cases where a wife persists in deliberate mistreatment of her husband and disregard for her marital obligations,” the book states. “Instead of divorce, the husband may resort to another measure that may save the marriage. … Such a measure is more accurately described as a gentle tap on the body.”

Badawi calls it a “permissible beating.”

Another book Hooper distributed as part of CAIR’s so-called Library Project condones Muslim men taking multiple wives.

“Polygamy is subject to precise Quranic restrictions,” including limiting the number of wives a Muslim man can marry to four, explains “Silent No More: Confronting America’s False Images of Islam” by Paul Findley, who says his manuscript was edited by the wife of CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad. His book also is published by Amana.

The books by Ali, Badawi and Findley can be seen displayed in a graphic used by CAIR to promote its Library Project.

Hooper, a Muslim convert who immigrated to the U.S. from Canada, once revealed he would like to see all Islamic laws – including those sanctioning violence against women – replace American laws.

In a 1993 interview with the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Hooper said, “I wouldn’t want to create the impression that I wouldn’t like the government of the United States to be Islamic sometime in the future.”

Hooper and his wife have spoken at Islamic Society of North America conventions that have held workshops on how to beat a woman “lightly.”

CAIR’s chief spokesman privately acknowledges that Islam suffers from a negative image due to its treatment of women and that it is a “major roadblock” to mainstreaming Islam in America, according to internal CAIR training materials on how to handle the American media, which were uncovered by the authors of the bestseller “Muslim Mafia.” The book exposes CAIR’s ties to the terrorist group Hamas and its founder, the Muslim Brotherhood, which is based in Egypt where Hooper once worked.

Still, in CAIR’s own handbook for journalists, Hooper recommends female reporters cover themselves before conducting interviews in mosques out of respect for the men there. He advises they show only their hands and faces.

The Virginia mosque Hooper attends, the ADAMS Center, requires women to worship separately from men in a penned-off area behind the men at the back of the worship hall. They also are advised to cover their heads with scarves.
