(WASHINGTONPOST) — A Richmond area high school will keep its Rebels team name after a student-led protest called attention to plans by the administration to field a new mascot without ties to the Confederacy.

Alecsys Brown, a rising senior at Douglas Southall Freeman High School in Henrico County, Va., said that she presented her petition with more than 1,200 signatures Tuesday to principal Anne L. Poates.

Brown said that during the meeting Poates told her that an earlier plan to introduce a new mascot, a lion, had been scrapped.
