This past weekend I had the opportunity to feel the pulse of the American people, and it was pounding pretty fast. Ann-Marie Murrell, Dr. Gina Loudon and I were traveling through Texas signing copies of our new book, "What Women Really Want," and we got an earful from the people who came out to meet us. Needless to say, they were anxious to vent their frustrations not only with Barack Obama, but with Congress and their lack of backbone in standing up to him.
We heard the same discontent in other parts of the country as well. I heard it in small towns in upstate New York, Marshfield, Missouri, Mount Airy and Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Macon, Georgia. Dr. Gina was recently in Florida, and Ann-Marie heard the voices of people in California. So it wasn't just the "conservative South."
We are seeing and hearing the concern about a government out of control and a president who has no regard for the Constitution. People overwhelmingly believe that the executive order put in place by Obama basically granting amnesty to millions of illegals is the final straw, and they want Congress to do something to rein him in.
In Longview, Texas, a concerned group of women came to talk to us about their fears of what this influx of illegals would mean for their families. They voiced their concerns about the schools being overcrowded, the language barrier for the teachers and the possible illnesses being transmitted to their children. Apart from the immigration issue, they were up in arms over the Common Core curriculum being forced on them. Many of them from other parts of Texas and even Oklahoma told stories of how they have stood up to their local school boards and state legislatures to have it removed from the schools.
In Hughes Springs, Texas, Ann-Marie's hometown, we had a long conversation with a group of men and women whose main question was, "How do we stop Obama from further destroying this country?" Many of them want action now – not later. They are tired of Boehner and many others in the Republican Party giving lip service and nothing else in response to the lawless actions Obama is taking. These people are far from "stupid"; they can see with crystal clear vision what is taking place, and they don't like it. These Americans know our history, they know what the Constitution says, they know the amendments, and every day they are learning more. One man from a tea party group in Nash, Texas, gave comparisons between today and the era of the American Revolution, and he knew exactly what he was talking about.
Another huge concern voiced by these people was the economic situation. These people in small towns feel that they are being squeezed out, and they fear that perhaps within one more generation, the middle class will no longer exist. These are people with small businesses. They are self-made entrepreneurs who started grass-roots businesses, and they see that with oppressive regulations and high taxes, they won't be able to survive. They talk about whether or not they can even keep their businesses if Obamacare doesn't get repealed, and they fear that their children and grandchildren will live in a country where there are only a small group of rich elites and an abundance of poor being subsidized by the government.
These Americans said loud and clear that they want the American Dream to continue to thrive, to prosper and grow. They want optimism back, and they want to put these dark days behind them. They are tired of negativity, bickering and division and want us once again to stand together and lead the way.
It will take leaders with backbone to do it. All of these people are hopeful that the results of the midterms will bring some new grit. But if it doesn't, these folks will be "mad as hell" and their voices will rattle the walls of Washington.
