Fukushima radiation in Canada, but not Alaska

(KTVA) — ANCHORAGE – News that Canadian scientists have detected radiation from the Fukushima nuclear disaster off the coast of British Columbia has Alaskans wondering what they can expect.

State veterinarian Dr. Bob Gerlach, who holds the position within the Alaska Department of Environment Conservation, has been part of a team in Alaska tracking Fukushima radiation. As part of his job, Gerlach monitors fish for contaminants such as mercury, trace metals and other contaminants.

Although radiation has been detected off the Canadian coast, Gerlach says no levels have been found in water samples taken in Alaskan coastal waters. He says kelp and fish samples, which have been collected and tested, also turned up clean.
