Saba Ahmed, a Muslim-American law student at American University in Washington, D.C., told an auditorium full of Americans that she doesn't see the world's 1.6 billion Muslims represented accurately in the Western media.
She believes the vast majority are peace-loving and tolerant.
"I know that we portray Islam almost always as bad. But there is almost 1.8 billion Muslims, and we have 8 million-plus Muslims in this country, and I don't see them represented here," she said at a recent Heritage Foundation conference on the jihadist attack on the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi, Libya, in September 2012.
"The jihadist ideology that you talk about is an ideology. How can you ever win this thing if you don't address it ideologically?" Ahmed asked.

Brigitte Gabriel, an Arab-American Christian and founder of ACT! For America, was ready with an answer that no doubt stirred passions on both sides of the issue and will continue to do so as the video clip gets out.
Gabriel agreed the majority of Muslims are peaceful folks who just want to live their lives as normal human beings. The problem, she said, is that an estimated 15 to 25 percent of the world's 1.2 billion Muslims, according to all intelligence services worldwide, are considered "radical."
Watch video clip of Brigitte Gabriel's 3.5-minute response to Muslim student below:
That means 180 million to 300 million people worldwide want to see the destruction of Western civilization. That's a population as big as the United States.
"So why should we worry about the radicals, 15 to 20 percent? Because it is the radicals that kill. Because it is the radicals that behead and massacre. When you look throughout history, when you look at all the lessons of History, most Germans were peaceful, yet the Nazis drove the agenda. And as a result, 60 million died, 14 million in concentration camps. Six million were Jews. The peaceful majority were irrelevant. When you look at Russia, most Russians were peaceful as well. Yet the Russians were able to kill 20 million people. The peaceful majority were irrelevant. When you look at China, most Chinese were peaceful as well. Yet, the Chinese (Communists) were able to kill 70 million people. The peaceful majority were irrelevant. When you look at Japan, prior to World War II, most Japanese were peaceful as well, yet Japan was able to butcher its way across Southeast Asia, killing 12 million people mostly killed with bayonets and shovels. The peaceful majority were irrelevant. On Sept. 11th in the United States we had 2.3 million Arab Muslims living in the United States. It took 19 hijackers, 19 radicals, to bring America down to its knees, destroy the World Trade Center, attack the Pentagon, and kill almost 3,000 Americans that day. The peaceful majority were irrelevant."
"I'm glad you're here. But where are the others speaking out? And since you are the only Muslim representative …"
At this point, the crowd broke out in applause so loud and enduring that Gabriel had to ask them to "save your applause till the end," because she wasn't done.
"It is time we take political correctness and throw it in the garbage where it belongs," she said.
For her efforts to cut through political correctness, Gabriel regularly gets branded an "Islamophobe" and a "hater" by both establishment media outlets and left-wing "watchdog" organizations, many of them receiving funding by the government and progressive icons like George Soros.
Her organization has 280,000 members and 890 chapters across the U.S., according to its website. This is nearly double the numbers it claimed five years ago.
The New York Times, in a 2011 profile of Gabriel, accused her of "presenting a portrait of Islam so thoroughly bent on destruction and domination that it is unrecognizable by those who study or practice the religion." The Times went on to report that "some of those who work in counter-terrorism say that speakers like Ms. Gabriel are spreading distortion and fear, and are doing the country a disservice by failing to make distinctions between Muslims who are potentially dangerous and those who are not."
Well, Gabriel seems to have answered her critics, clearly explaining the difference between the "peaceful Muslims," which make up 75 to 85 percent of the world's Muslims, and the remaining 15 to 25 percent who are dedicated to the destruction of Western values, culture and civilization. Set in those terms, her message seems no less chilling.
