It comes as no surprise to vigilant people that America is now on a steep downhill trajectory. There are endless contributions to this increasingly slippery slope: the creation of the Federal Reserve back in 1913, the compulsory nationalization of public education, the banishment of God from public places and the growth of federal power at the expense of states' rights, to name a few.
How could this have happened? How could the greatest nation in the history of humanity – the country that gave the world a 5,000 year leap – be heading for the dustbin? It wasn't until I read a line in an American Minute column that I finally "got it."
The column outlined Mexico's struggles in the last 200 years to build a prosperous nation. "The revolution continued until Mexico gained its independence in 1821. In the next 36 years, Mexico struggled through 50 different governments. … Santa Anna finally laid aside Mexico's constitution and made himself dictator. … [He said,] 'A hundred years to come my people will not be fit for liberty. … A despotism is the proper government for them, but there is no reason why it should not be a wise and virtuous one.'"
Holy cow. Fifty different governments in 36 years, only to have a "wise and virtuous" dictator "lay aside" the country's constitution? How could that happen?
The answer to that question came later in the column: "Contrary to America, where for a century and a half prior to its independence citizens had been schooled by pastors and church leaders in self-government …"
For 150 years prior to the birth of America, citizens had been schooled by pastors and church leaders in self-government. And there you have it, folks. They key to a successful republic is to educate its citizens in self-government.
What is self-government? The dictionary defines it as: government under the control and direction of the inhabitants of a political unit rather than by an outside authority. But the term encompasses more than that. For a people to be self-governed, they must first govern themselves. They must be self-controlled, honest, self-disciplined, self-restrained and independent. They must take pride in their own labor, avoid charity as a career choice and insist that these same attributes be the basis of their communities and the foundation of their children's education.
But in the last 50 years, America has been doing the opposite. We have been systematically "anti-educating" ourselves in the art of self-government. Our nation's legacy of restraint, self-control, discipline, self-sufficient and other qualities has been intentionally undermined and destroyed. Those who live by those virtues are harassed, attacked and interrogated as suspicious and subversive.
When self-government fails, totalitarian forms of government such as communism rush in to fill the void. History has given us, time and time again, such charming examples as Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, Cambodia, Cuba and other vacation spots.
Let's take a look at a few quotes from men who witnessed the fruits of these forms of government:
Harry S. Truman, March 6, 1946: "Dictatorship … is founded on the doctrine that the individual amounts to nothing … the State is the only thing that counts, and that men, women and children were put on earth solely for the purpose of serving the State."
Harry S. Truman, May 11, 1950: "The greatest obstacle to peace is a modern tyranny led by a small group who have abandoned their faith in God. These tyrants have forsaken ethical and moral beliefs. They believe that only force makes right. They are aggressively seeking to expand the area of their domination."
Harry S. Truman, April 3, 1951: "The international Communist movement is based on a fierce and terrible fanaticism. It denies the existence of God and, wherever it can, it stamps out the worship of God. Our religious faith gives us the answer to the false beliefs of communism."
Dwight D. Eisenhower: "You can't explain free government in any other terms than religious. The Founding Fathers had to refer to the Creator in order to make their revolutionary experiment make sense; it was because 'all men are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights' that men could dare to be free. … The Bill of Rights contains no grant of privilege for a group of people to destroy the Bill of Rights. A group – like the Communist conspiracy – dedicated to the ultimate destruction of all civil liberties, cannot be allowed to claim civil liberties as its privileged sanctuary from which to carry on subversion of the government."
These were not stupid, deluded men. These were men who had witnessed firsthand the evils of communism and the horrors of dictators. But our current generations have forgotten (or never learned) about the evil and horror. Today, thanks to decades of whitewashing and indoctrination, people view communism (renamed under the kinder, gentler terms progressive, liberal, green, whatever) as a benign force for "social justice" and "fairness."
But it's not benign, socially just, or fair. Communism is just as horrifying and evil as it ever was. And as the quotes above illustrate, nationalized atheism is very much a necessary goal for the destruction of our republic to succeed.
The chief culprit in making sure Americans are no longer capable of self-government is the public schools. Monopolies are unhealthy anyway, but educational monopolies run by the government ensure that the only thing taught to pupils is approved by, and supportive of, the government agenda. Schools no longer teach. They indoctrinate, rewrite and lie about history, mock and distort religious beliefs, and promote a single progressive agenda. They discourage self-control and encourage hedonism (since, after all, any "mistakes" can be "fixed" by Planned Parenthood). Their goal is to achieve a massive universal groupthink populace incapable of questioning the government, much less governing themselves.
Don't like it? Too bad. As someone once famously observed, "When an opponent declares, 'I will not come over to your side,' I say calmly, 'Your child belongs to us already. What are you? You will pass on. Your descendants, however, now stand in the new camp. In a short time they will know nothing but this new community.'"
Or to put it more bluntly, "Keep 'em down, dumb and dependent." It's working. It's working brilliantly. Soon Americans will no longer be able to govern themselves, and they'll beg the government to do it for them.
Why do you think homeschooling is almost universally hated among government officials? It's because they recognize the dangers inherent in having children growing up devoid of government indoctrination. Children who are taught their American heritage of self-government as outlined in the Constitution and Bill of Rights are not as likely to fall for the sweet lies of dictators.
Folks, do yourself, your children and the future of America an enormous favor: Yank your kids out of public schools and teach them to self-govern … before it's too late.
