The world’s most enthusiastic golf fans may just be, well, aliens.
New video footage of a PGA tournament in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, has observers asking: Did a UFO appear in the sky during the May 9 event?
One golf fan viewed the tournament on television and “noticed a weird object in the sky,” according to the Mutual UFO Network, or MUFON.
“When you see the pictures, people may think ‘oh, that’s a blimp,’ but after seeing the blimp in other clips, I can easily conclude it’s not the blimp,” the viewer said.
“I also looked for other aircrafts flying by and nothing seemed plausible. The object did have a reflective surface. In the picture, you’ll see a golf ball, a bird, and the flash reflection, while the other object is the unknown craft. You can also notice the object appears to be at a very high altitude for any aircrafts being used for the tournament. I rewind and slow motion, fast forward dozens of times. Very strange.”
Watch the film footage of the UFO:
MUFON – which does not divulge the names of people who report UFO sightings – says the sighting occurred at 1:45 p.m. EST and was reported to the site on May 12.
A screenshot from the video shows a golf ball in the top, right corner. At the lower left corner, the UFO hovers near a bird.
MUFON’s chief image and video analyst, Marc Dantonio, told the Huffington Post, “If you watch the video carefully, you can see the object moving across the field independently of the ball.”
Dantonio added, “You see the object change apparent ‘shape.’ After reviewing this object multiple times, I could clearly detect motion within it that looked to me indicative of a bird in the middle of a wing stroke.”
So was the UFO actually just another bird?
“At one point, when the wings are in a particular position, the object presents a birdlike appearance, and as the camera zooms out, you can see a more definitive bird high in the sky with its wings outstretched,” Dantonio told HuffPo.
“To me, these are birds in mid-flight,” he said. “The bottom one in the still images is clearly a bird with fully outstretched wings. The one in the middle is the one that you can see changing in the video, and it has demonstrated to me, anyway, that it appears like a bird in flight.”
It’s certainly not the first time a strange object has been spotted over a golf course.
On Oct. 12, 2008, three golfers said they saw a UFO in the sky at Shorecliffs Golf Course in San Clemente, California.
“After we saw this, my hands were too shaky to play the back nine,” one golfer wrote, according to the Orange County Register. “Even though I did finish playing, my mind was consumed in the ski (sic). I will never be the same. I wish I could have seen it closer.”
Another UFO sighting in San Clemente was reportedly witnessed by eight people in 2008.
“I saw a rectangular UFO in the night sky with my whole family over OC,” the report said. “Very bright, second brightest object in sky besides the moon. The object appeared to twist or change shape. Blue/white lights coming out of it. Someone in a nearby location pointed a searchlight at the clouds below the object. I can’t find any news reports or current UFO reports and it’s driving me nuts. This thing was amazing.”
As further evidence that aliens must enjoy golf, the Curiosity rover spotted this spherical object – which closely resembles a dirty golf ball – on the surface of Mars in September 2014:
