Keith Broomfield, the 36-year-old Massachusetts man who traveled as a citizen to Syria to fight alongside Kurd forces against ISIS – and who was killed – is due to be buried this week.
Broomfield had no military training and is thought to be the first U.S. citizen to die fighting against the terror group.
He worked as a plant manager at his family's business in Bolton, WBUR reported. He was killed on June 3 and his body sent back to Boston over the weekend.
His obituary stated he died "in defense of those being persecuted for their Christian faith" and that "his heart was for the protection of the innocence of Kurdish women and children."
Broomfield's family said he only wanted to fight against "evil."
In a video that was posted online, Broomfield said he traveled to Syria "to do what I can to help Kurdistan" because "it seems like the right thing to do."
Broomfield, who's survived by his parents and five siblings, will be buried Wednesday.
