TEL AVIV – Salafist groups in the Gaza Strip allied with Islamic State ideology sent WND a statement taking responsibility for a rocket launched from Gaza toward southern Israel on Tuesday.
Sirens sounded Tuesday night Israel time in the communities of Zikim, Karmia, Netiv HaAsara and Yad Mordechai, all located close to the Gaza Strip.
The jihadist who contacted WND is a senior member of Ansar Bait al-Maqdis, which represents ISIS in the Sinai Peninsula and now claims a foothold in Gaza. The Gaza branch calls itself the Sheikh Omar Hadid Brigade.
Hamas has launched an intensive and bloody crackdown on Gazan Salafist groups in recent weeks, with those organizations claiming responsibility for firing rockets into Israel as part of that internal Gaza dispute.
The Salafists seemingly want to draw Israeli retaliation targeting the Hamas infrastructure. Israel holds Gaza’s Hamas rulers responsible for rockets fired by Gazan groups.
The Israel Defense Forces told WND the rocket landed in an open area near the toen of Yad Mordechai.
