Presidential hopeful and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee scoffed at the suggestion America couldn't secure its borders, telling a national television audience the country very well could – it just needed the right president,
"The fact people say we can't secure the border is nonsense," he said, on "State of the Union" on CNN. "This country can do it. We just need a president who wants to as well."
Ann Coulter's famed blunt talk rises again, in "Adios, America!"
He made the remarks in context of discussing fellow presidential hopeful Donald Trump's recent statements about Mexico that have sparked a national firestorm. Trump, during his campaign announcement speech, accused Mexico of sending mostly rapists and other criminals across the border into America, and pledged to force the country to pay for a fence.
When asked about Trump's comments, Huckabee took the high road and declined to slam the billionaire, the Hill reported.
"Honestly, Donald Trump needs no help from Mike Huckabee in getting publicity," he said. "He's doing a great job of that on his own."
He did say, however, he shared Trump's view of border control and that America needs to do a much better job of enforcing its immigration laws.
"I get on my knees every night and thank God I live in a country people are trying to break into, not out of," Huckabee said, the Hill reported. "Are there some people who come here with nefarious goals? Yes. But I would never besmirch all the people who come here."
Trump's actual comments, at his campaign launch: "[Mexico is] sending people who have a lot of problems. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."
