Last week the big guns came out in full force against Donald Trump. When it finally dawned on the GOP elites that Trump was in all likelihood headed for the nomination they came to the realization that he had to be stopped, and he had to be stopped at all costs. So out came former presidential nominee and election loser Mitt Romney, who unloaded his venom against Trump with both barrels.
In an unprecedented speech, he used everything he had to discredit, demean and degrade Trump to the American people; you would have thought that Satan himself was running for office. I sat listening to his words, and the conclusion I took away from the whole spectacle was that this party was clinging with its fingernails to its last chance to maintain power. It was sheer desperation.
I also noticed that Romney touted conservatism over and over again. He tried to make us actually believe that he was a bastion of conservative values and that the Republican Party just couldn't lose its battle to save and further those conservative values by nominating someone like Donald Trump. Really? Since when? Isn't that the reason he lost: because he wasn't a conservative? All I have seen is that the current Republican Party has done everything it can to compromise its values and kowtow to Obama's liberal agenda. That is how we got to where we are today. If anything or anyone is responsible for Donald Trump's success and popularity, it is today's Republican Party. Yet, to hear the GOP establishment speak out on all of the news and talk shows, you would think that they were more conservative than Rush Limbaugh!
So here is something to ponder. If indeed, the GOP establishment is sooo concerned about "conservative values," why aren't they now rallying behind the candidate who is the only "real, authentic, conservative" left in the race? Ted Cruz? He has now won at least six states in the primaries and caucuses and is about 100 delegates behind Trump, so why don't they see Cruz as their "golden boy" to carry the torch for conservatism? They are hell-bent on destroying Trump, and if they succeed, wouldn't it seem that Ted Cruz would be their obvious choice if what they are saying is true?
That is not the case because after the implosion of Jeb Bush, they have put all of their money on Marco Rubio. Even after his dismal performances in the first few states where he did not take higher than second place and more often was in third, and with his chances of winning his own state of Florida looking dimmer and dimmer, why are these "conservative-loving" elites still pushing hard for Rubio? After last weekend it looks to be a two-man race between Trump and Cruz, yet Rubio is still their man.
At this point, the establishment has really painted themselves into a corner. They can look at the voter turnout and see that the "real conservative Republicans" are turning out in record numbers for the "outsiders," not the insider politicians. They are caught in their own web because the base of their own party is calling the shots now and wresting control away from them. They are frantically pushing Rubio as a conservative, but everyone knows it isn't real. There is just no traction for Rubio, who has not fought against Washington and carries the "Gang of Eight" debacle over his head. The conservative base of the party likes a businessman who speaks his mind and tells it like it is, and they like a renegade senator who calls out his own colleagues when they lie to the American people. Rubio is spinning his wheels – and even if he stays in until the convention, it will be an effort in futility.
The truth is, the GOP elites hate Trump, but they hate Cruz more. That is the reason that they won't rally behind him while trying to take out Trump. This is their worst nightmare come true because they know that even as a freshman senator, Cruz couldn't be managed and controlled. He is tough and sticks to his principles, and they can't abide that. So now they are stuck with Trump or Cruz and they are frantically looking options. At this point, I believe that they would rather lose the election to the Democrats than see Trump or Cruz win. They would rather an "establishment" candidate like Hillary keep the power structure alive than do what is best for this country.
The American people know what they are doing, and they know what they are up against in this election. Turnout is higher than it has ever been for a Republican primary, and people are more involved and informed than ever before. That scares the life out of the elites on both sides.
The page is turning for both the Republican and the Democrat parties because there is a tug of war between the will of the people and the will of the establishment. It will be a bloody battle, and if any shenanigans or back room deals are pulled on either side, there will be hell to pay.
