Apologists for the offshore outsourcing of blue-collar jobs say those who've had their jobs taken away from them can be retrained for new jobs.
On signing NAFTA, Bill Clinton said Americans would change jobs eight times in their lifetime. It's a line repeated by numerous professional pundits and pols, all of whom it seems keep their same career for life (and even try to hand it on to their wives and children).
This dogmatic faith in re-education is a conceit of the academic-centric class. Everything they needed for professional certification came from a textbook, and they overlook the fact that most learning comes from doing.
The belief that individuals are putty that can be endlessly molded and remolded also springs from an atheistic or human-centered worldview.
If you believe that we are unique individuals endowed with a special gift by our Creator, the aim of education is to impart in students the skills (discipline, discernment, critical thinking, etc.) that will enable them to discover and cultivate their inherent talent.
TRENDING: America's most dangerous demographic
But if you don't believe in G-d, Man is seen as an empty vessel that can be recast to fill the needs of the Proletarian Revolution, the collective good, or the deified Market, its current avatar being "the global economy." (And that's exactly the goal of Common Core – to train students "to work and compete in the global economy.")
So how has this retraining thing worked out?
Study after study shows that most American workers whose jobs went to China ended up in lower-paying jobs, or worse. The Obama administration acknowledges this, proposing the government supplement incomes for the employed as well as the unemployed.
And the reality is even more grisly than lost wages.
Those blue-collar white workingmen whose jobs were offshored are dying at a far higher rate than any other demographic group in America.
Robbed of the opportunity to support their wives and children, they are literally drinking and drugging themselves to death.
This is the final outcome of the experiment in mass re-education.
"New economy" technocrats envisioned an America of white-collar professionals (and their temporary guest-worker servants) from sea to shining sea.
They were willing to go to any length to make their vision a reality.
We now see it was a death trip for those who didn't fit the mold.
Will our elites acknowledge their experiment failed?
If not, when the final body count is tallied, it must be placed against those of earlier visionaries – Josef Stalin and Pol Pot.
