A hacking group called OurMine sent out a series of mocking messages aimed at Mark Zuckerberg, telling the Facebook founder its members had successfully hacked his social media accounts and outright daring him to contact them.
"Hey @finkd we got access to your Twitter & Instagram & Pinterest, we are just testing your security, please dm [direct message] us," the group wrote, BBC found.
Instagram is owned by Facebook.
OurMine has more than 40,000 followers on Twitter, and claimed responsibility for the hack of Zuckerberg's Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest accounts, albeit briefly.
The news site Engadget posted a screenshot of the group's claimed hack of Zuckerberg's Twitter account, followed by this, purporting to actually be Zuckerberg, or @finkd: "@_OurMine_ No you didn't. Go away, skids."
Shortly after, another message from Zuckerberg's account read: "Hey, @finkd You were in Linkedin Database with the password [deleted]! DM for proof."
The Twitter posts have since been deleted. But Zuckerberg has apparently not sent a tweet from his own account since 2012, BBC reported.
Various media outlet reported the Zuckerberg social-page hacks could have stemmed from a LinkedIn security breach from 2012 that resulted in the theft of 117 million passwords.
"There could be more hacks like Zuckerberg's to come," the Guardian said. "The LinkedIn password dump, which came to light in May, was shortly followed by one three times as big from Myspace. The data may be eight years old, but with around 360 million accounts, there are sure to be some people still using the same email address and password."
