WASHINGTON – Luke Albee, dubbed “the dean of Senate chiefs of staff,” had a big idea for John Podesta, Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager, according to a recent WikiLeaks dump of Democratic emails.

It’s an idea so audacious, it wouldn’t just defeat Donald Trump, but result in a landslide for Clinton.

Podesta’s reaction: “… [M]ay be tough, but worth looking for an opening.”

Here’s the idea from a hacked email discussion between the two from November 20, 2015 – long before most Washington insiders admitted publicly Trump had a chance to get the Republican nomination.

It seems Albee has conferred with “hundreds and hundreds of Virginia Tea Party folks for (Mark) Warner and having actually listened to them.” His conclusion? “I think there’s something here” in regard to turning them into Clinton supporters.

“Trump (and others?) have called for registering Muslims,” Albee wrote to Podesta. “He has called for a federal domestic police force that will be focussed (sic) on arresting and deporting 11 million people. Other candidates are talking about separating immigrants by religion. All of this is about building up and feeding the BIG BROTHER beast. The Tea Party was born bc of the perception of government encroachment in peoples (sic) lives – and it really has always been the Rand Paul mantra: government wants to control your health care decisions. Government wants [to] register all your guns, which will ultimately lead to gun confiscation. Government wants the ability to murder its own citizens with drones (remember the Rand Paul filibuster on that one?). The Snowden stuff confirmed what many felt. . .the government was collecting vast troves of information on everyone.

“At a certain point, I think HRC might bring together all the different strands (mostly Trumps) of expanding federal Big Brother government – and talk about how its (sic) possible to be safe without creating some kind of large and cumbersome and intrusive police state.

“This will sew (sic) divisions and acrimony on the other side. But it may be too early to raise this. Or maybe she SHOULD pick a fight with Trump on this to help cement his front runner status. Luke”

Podesta responded: “Interesting. Her instincts are to buy some of the law enforcement arguments on crypto and Snowden type issues. So may be tough, but worth looking for an opening.”

Is it time yet?

Albee was chief of staff to Warner from 2009 through 2015. Earlier, he worked for Sen Patrick Leahy from 1993 through 2004.

Interesting. Her instincts are to buy some of the law enforcement arguments on crypto and Snowden type issues. So may be tough, but worth looking for an opening.

Albee, described as “the Dean of Senate Chiefs of Staff” by Politico, has served as chief of staff to Senators Mark Warner (2009-15) and Patrick Leahy (1993-2004), directing a broad array of legislative, policy, political and communications activities for both Members. From 2004 to 2008, Albee was a Principal at Ricchetti, Inc., a Democratic lobbying and consulting firm. He has a Master’s degree in International Relations from the London School of Economics, and is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Vermont.
