Separate me, please, from those scribes who try to pretend their work is all shrewd analysis marinated in the astringent juices of their own genius. Cut it out! We're all just guessing.
And here are the rules for this great profession of "guessing." If you're a good guesser, you're allowed to keep on guessing. If you guess wrong about something big, you've got to quit guessing for a while, something like sitting in the penalty box in hockey. In this space you may have read that Donald Trump would win the Republican nomination when there were 16 others in the running. Later you may have read right here that Trump would win the election. So, leave me alone. I'm allowed to guess again!
You know there's been talk, fearsome talk, about a new American civil war. We've already had that new civil war. And Trump is the winner.
It's true what they say about Trump Derangement Syndrome. The mask is off. The Democrats don't give a gnat's kidney about pre-existing conditions or immigration or sanctuary cities. They're still recoiling from Trumpogenic election-night trauma, and they want American life to return to "normal," meaning Trump apologizes for his effrontery and goes back full-time into real estate and Hillary becomes president. Nothing short of that will do, but they're just beginning to see and sense that they're not going to achieve that absurd goal.
Even the dimmer lights among the Democrats were warning their clinically insane protesters that you don't impeach an American president just because you don't like him. There has to be a "high crime or misdemeanor" in there somewhere, and for the first few months of Democratic head-banging without benefit of padded cells, there was no such thing.
TRENDING: St. Patrick's role on the 'external hard drive'
All of a sudden in mid-May it looked like the Trump-haters' fantasy was coming true. The alchemists of ancient times never succeeded in converting ordinary metals into solid gold, but the political alchemists of today's Democratic Party did succeed in converting vapors into solid "obstruction of justice," namely, Trump asking then-FBI Director James Comey to "Let the investigation of General Mike Flynn go." And there was great excitement throughout the Democratic ranks of those who began to hate more intelligently. Not only did they now have a "crime," they had an independent counsel to investigate it. The No. 2 man in the Justice Department, Rod Rosenstein, appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel. Here's where flaky history ends and solid guesswork begins!
It doesn't take long to realize a Broadway play is a flop. Likewise, it takes almost no time to realize your political fantasies are invalid, in fact, diseased, and likely to be the end of your participation in real-life American politics. The more intelligent and disciplined Democrats had thought – and hoped – that there would be a groundswell, an uprising of Americans to go ahead and impeach Trump. Remember the 5-year-old girl who won American hearts during the Vietnam War when she asked her father, "What if they gave a war and nobody showed up?" Well, this time "they gave an impeachment and nobody showed up!"
The Democrats were sure there'd be kaffeeklatsches, marches, torchlight parades, multi-million-signature petitions, riots and mini-revolutions once the American public connected with its "dream," an apparent Trump crime plus an independent counsel. "Bang!" went the starter's pistol. And the "Impeach-Trump" excitement started out weak and gradually tapered off.
Ultimately, the needle didn't move. Anti-Trump activity after the "obstruction of justice" revelation and the independent counsel remained exactly what it "normally" was, not counting the "purchased hordes" of protesters paid by George Soros. And leaders of both sides realized they didn't count.
With doomed Broadway shows, there's a window of mere minutes between the fall of the final curtain on opening night and the realization the play is a flop. There's a somewhat longer window between the failure of a present-day anti-Trump "Beer-Hall Putsch" and broad public awareness that nobody's interested. At that point somebody initiated a top-secret get-together with representatives of Trump, Trump's enemies and what's left of the once-sturdy practical wing of the Democratic Party. A pragmatist is one who believes the "Do Not Disturb" signs should be in the language of the hotel maids. And right there is where I'm guessing the deal was cut. The Dems would lay off their Impeach-Trump sniping. In return the "independent counsel" would throw what looks like a good "investigation." Already on Day 1 they announced someone close to Trump at the White House was a "Person of Interest." Good move. That makes it look good and defuses explosive Democrats so no ungainly fragrance reaches their nostrils.
So now the Trump-haters have their special counsel. Trump has a new layer of thick armor covering his back. And as day after day goes by, the Dems will see the energy waft away from their big dreams, and Trump will eventually Tweet about letting his enemies off so easily. Trump's enemies will have to watch Trump's triumphal romp through Saudi Arabia, Israel and the Vatican. And Trump will have to watch his enemies live to fight another day.
And my next guess is, Trump will win that one, too!
