WASHINGTON – When Otto Warmbier was arrested in North Korea after allegedly stealing a propaganda poster, a half-dozen left-leaning publications mocked the 22-year-old American.
Warmbier was brutalized and terrorized while imprisoned by the rogue regime and died only six days after being returned to the United States.
But when the communist regime was prosecuting him, Salon published an article with the headline "This might be America's biggest idiot frat boy: Meet the UVa student who thought he could pull a prank in North Korea."
The article called his punishment “richly deserved” and reveled in Warmbier's humiliation.

A tweet promoting the article included a photo of Warmbier crying at his sentencing hearing with the letters "A**" superimposed over it, according to Heat Street. The article was deleted after Warmbier's death and the subsequent outcry.
The Huffington Post ran a similar article before Warmbier's death, titled "North Korea Proves Your White Male Privilege Is Not Universal."
The author, La Sha, blamed Warmbier's alleged theft of the poster on his "reckless gall" that could only come from him being "socialized first as a white boy, and then as a white man in this country."
"The high of privilege told him that North Korea's history of making examples out of American citizens who dare challenge their rigid legal system in any way was no match for his alabaster American privilege," La Sha continued.
Another online magazine, Bustle, continued with the "white privilege" narrative. Bustle ran a piece titled "Why Do People Blame Otto Warmbier For His North Korea Sentence? Privilege Can Sometimes Come At A Price."
The article pushed the notion that "white privilege" was still a factor in Warmbier's decision to commit the crime.
Warmbier was also the subject of insults and derision by "The Nightly Show" with Larry Wilmore. After implying that Warmbier was a "frat bro" who possessed great privilege, Wilmore blasted him for crying at his sentencing.
"It's just tough for me to have much sympathy for this guy and his crocodile tears," Wilmore said.
Even after Warmbier was returned to the United States and then died, other left-wing publications continued to mock and deride him for the fact that he was white.
"Watch whiteness work. He wasn't a 'kid' or 'innocent,' you can't go to another country and try to steal from them. Respect their laws," Affinity Magazine tweeted.
Affinity Magazine features many articles promoting illegal immigration, with a recent piece titled "Undocumented Immigrants: Why They Can't Just 'Get in Line.'"
On "Tucker Carlson Tonight," North Korea expert Michael Malice denounced the narrative of the publications that placed the blame on Warmbier.
"What he was alleged to have done was to displace or remove a propaganda poster. The only reason he was targeted is because he is an American," Malice said.
"If you don’t understand [North Korea], the thing to do is be quiet and learn. As opposed to using it as a glib reason to have your stupid leftist talking-points, and mock someone who died while being a tourist," Malice added.
"These people are cretins through-and-through."
