When “Christmas movie” is the question, the answers are innumerable.
There’s “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “The Santa Clause,” “A Christmas Story,” “Home Alone,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “The Polar Express,” multiple versions of “A Christmas Carol,” “Miracle on 34th Street,” “White Christmas,” “Elf,” “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” “Holiday Inn,” “Babes in Toyland” and many more.
There are many lists of the best, from Good Housekeeping, Nerve.com, Rotten Tomatoes, Elle, AMC and Hallmark.
There are adventures, romances, comedies, fantasies and musicals.
Now comes one that doesn’t fit into any of the categories.
It’s the “Christmas Gone Viral” project by Christian evangelist Ray Comfort of Living Waters that points out while some 2 billion people around the globe celebrate Christmas, “few truly understand the meaning of that famous hymn – that Jesus was ‘born that man no more may die.'”
“When I was asked by one of the networks to produce a Christmas special, I wanted it to be different from the typical Christmas program. An idea came after I found out that an incredible two billion people around the world celebrate the holiday – even if they don’t understand the birth of Jesus,” explained Comfort.

“I asked Christians in different countries to take a camera onto the streets and ask people’s thoughts about Christmas, and use it as a springboard for the gospel,” he said.
“The result is very moving, as people’s hearts melt when they hear the true reason we celebrate.”
It turns out the “reason for the season” isn’t really shopping malls and online discounts.
Two large TV networks, DayStar and Trinity Broadcasting Network, will air the one-hour special in mid-December, but it also is available already from Living Waters.
Comfort said the purchases eventually will make the movie available free on YouTube as a Gospel outreach.
Todd Friel, host of “Wretched Radio & TV,” said: “Hallmark, the Nutcracker, and Burl Ives will not bring you a fraction of the joy (and conviction, and tears) that Ray Comfort’s ‘Christmas Gone Viral’ will. Watch it with friends, family, and a box of tissues.”
Alex Kendrick, producer and director of “Fireproof” and “War Room,” said the film is “an excellent way to present the gospel.”
Comfort said the early response from pastors is that they want to show it in their church.
The movie features interviews with people around the globe, asking them to talk about what’s beneath the veneer of lights, tinsel, gift wrap and Christmas melodies.
The DayStar and Trinity Broadcast Network broadcasts reach households in hundreds of countries.
The YouTube trailer link generated both support and harsh criticism on Christianity.
The contrast included, “Christmas is a pagan holiday. I expected more from this channel,” and, “I love Living Waters ministries!!! God bless you!!”
One person commented: “SANTA=SATAN,” and another said, “Yall need to read your Bibles.”
Another said: “During Christmas we celebrate the birth of our Savior. We know it was not on December 25th, we esteem one day as another. Our children know this. We give Christmas a Christian meaning not a pagan practice. Our focus is on our Savior. If Ray can save one person or if one person can be born again, then, AMEN!”
