Student resolution objects to 'gay' promotion

Students at a community college in California have adopted a resolution condemning the pro-homosexual "Day of Silence" event held in public schools as a "propaganda and intimidation tactic which seeks to suppress dissent, such as has happened in fascist regimes and in the former Soviet Union."

The resolution was adopted by an 11-5 vote of the student council of the 42,000-student American River College.

"The passage of this resolution marks new progress for community colleges," said resolution supporter Vladimir Musorivschi. "The 'Day of Silence' project has been used as an opportunity to suspend Christian students at local schools for wearing Bible verses on their shirts. The 'Day of Silence' is truly about silencing the voices of Christian students and we will oppose this censorship."

Rep. George Popko said, "We are concerned about the 'Day of Silence' being used as a propaganda and intimidation tactic which seeks to suppress dissent, such as has happened in fascist regimes and in the former Soviet Union, from which some members of the Student council escaped. We do not want to see our state and national governments allow tactics like the 'Day of Silence' in public schools, colleges, and universities to silence Christians."

WND previously reported when a coalition of family organizations launched a walkout campaign that encourages parents to keep kids home on days when their schools celebrate the "Day of Silence." The official day this year is today, but some schools mark the event on other days.

WND also reported when "gay" program opponents were targeted with death threats for their opposition to the events.

The student council previously voted to endorse the California Proposition 8 Marriage Initiative, a decision that led to an unsuccessful recall effort to unseat the student leaders.

The Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network has sponsored the nationwide silent protest every April for the last 12 years. The event is said to be a showing of support for "gay," lesbian, bisexual and transgender victims of violence and bullying. According to GLSEN's 2005 National School Climate Survey, four out of five LGBT children experience harassment in school. The organization claims 64 percent of "gay" students feel unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation and 41 percent because of their "gender expression."

GLSEN claims there are about 4,000 homosexual clubs now in American high schools and middle schools.

Another organization opposing the promotion in schools is Save California, whose president, Randy Thomasson, said the event is no more than a "hijacking of public schools."

"Good parents who are in the know, who will do anything to protect their sons and daughters from sexual exploitation, are removing their children from public school on Friday," he said.

Thomasson said the DOS "sends the false message to impressionable children that believing homosexuality is immoral constitutes bullying."

His organization described the day: "On 'Day of Silence,' sexually-confused students disrupt class time by refusing to speak; some put tape over their mouths; some teachers also remain silent, refusing to teach effectively, during instructional time. The academic purpose of the day is ruined. The school's agenda is politicized. Parents' traditional values are implicitly ridiculed. The student body is sent the message that homosexuality is natural, when it's not."
