(RedState) — The late, great Lewis Grizzard attended the University of Georgia with a man named “Joe,” where they developed a lifelong friendship. Joe grew up poor in rural Southwest Georgia. He was only a boy when he found the body of his dead father who had taken his own life with the family shotgun. Joe became the man of the house to his mother and two sisters. Despite a learning disability and poverty, Joe made his way to the University of Georgia. Afterwards, as Grizzard wrote, “[Joe] finished school and went to Vietnam. He was even shot at a couple of times, but they missed.”

When Joe arrived stateside from the war he was literally spat on by a protester at the airport. But, Joe loved his country, and he loved his hometown. He returned to UGA to study pharmacy and then, without a second thought, moved back to rural Southwest Georgia to be a part of the town that was so much a part of him.

Grizzard summed up his friend this way:

(CBSNEWS) — New research shows that men who had ADHD as children are twice as likely to be obese by the time they grow up than men who did not have the mental disorder as kids.

Even when socioeconomic factors were taken into account, men who had ADHD when they were younger still were more likely to be obese as adults, according to a new 30-year study published May 20 in Pediatrics.

“That really seems to be reflective of their early hyperactivity. It doesn’t matter what their current diagnosis is so much, so we think these are longstanding issues that likely arose in early adolescence,” study co-author Dr. Francisco Xavier Castellanos, a professor of child and adolescent psychiatry in the Child Study Center at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City, told HealthDay.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court said Monday it will hear a new case on the intersection of religion and government in a dispute over prayers used to open public meetings.

The justices said they will review an appeals court ruling that held that the upstate New York town of Greece, a Rochester suburb, violated the Constitution by opening nearly every meeting over an 11-year span with prayers that stressed Christianity.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the town should have made a greater effort to invite people from other faiths to open its monthly board meetings.

(Free-foundation.org) — “What do you expect when you target the President?” This is what an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agent allegedly said to the head of a conservative organization that was being audited after calling for the impeachment of then-President Clinton. Recent revelations that IRS agents gave “special scrutiny” to organizations opposed to the current administration’s policies suggest that many in the IRS still believe harassing the President’s opponents is part of their job.

As troubling as these recent reports are, it would be a grave mistake to think that IRS harassment of opponents of the incumbent President is a modern, or a partisan, phenomenon. As scholar Burton Folsom pointed out in his book New Deal or Raw Deal, IRS agents in the 1930s where essentially “hit squads” against opponents of the New Deal. It is well-known that the administrations of John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson used the IRS to silence their critics. One of the articles of impeachment drawn up against Richard Nixon dealt with his use of the IRS to harass his political enemies. Allegations of IRS abuses were common during the Clinton administration, and just this week some of the current administration’s defenders recalled that antiwar and progressive groups alleged harassment by the IRS during the Bush presidency.
