Liberals have long debated that national borders are no longer necessary because of the “withering away or the state,” and free-trade encourages peaceful cooperation and discourages aggression. However, with the Russian takeover of Crimea, liberals seem to be more concerned with the borders of Ukraine than that of the United States. Furthermore, the claim that free trade discourages aggression appears to be false.
