Talk radio star Michael Savage has launched a petition on his website that enables Americans to stand up for free speech by asking their representatives to persuade the British government to remove his name from a "least wanted" list.

As WND has reported, Britain's former home secretary, Jacqui Smith, announced in May that Savage was on a list of banned figures that include Muslim extremists and leaders of hate groups. Savage has threatened a lawsuit if his name is not removed.

The petition appeals to members of Congress to "act with the U.S. State Department and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to persuade the British government to immediately remove Michael Savage's name from its list of banned murderers and terrorists."

The petition's preface notes Smith's list was aimed at excluding people who "stir up, justify or glorify terrorism, encourage others to participate in terrorist acts, engage in serious criminal activity or encourage others in such activity."

As WND reported, official correspondence, released under the U.K.'s Freedom of Information law, revealed a decision was made "at the highest level of government" to use Savage's name to provide "balance" to a list dominated by Muslim extremists.

"We will want to ensure that the names disclosed reflect the broad range of cases and are not all Islamic extremists," reads a draft recommendation, marked "Restricted," that was obtained as part of Savage's libel lawsuit against the government and Smith.

The petition points out that "contrary to the accusations of the former home secretary, Savage has never advocated violence and repeatedly has called for the lawful enforcement of America's borders, language and culture."

Nevertheless, the British home secretary listed his name "alongside Russian skinheads imprisoned for murdering 10 immigrants and a Hamas terrorist who executed two Jewish parents and bashed in the head of their 4-year-old daughter."

Meanwhile, impressed with the controversy, the vaunted 200-year-old Cambridge Union Society in England has invited Savage to participate in a debate next month.

The invitation letter, signed by the society's presidents, says the Cambridge Union has been following Savage's case "with great interest" and believes he is "more qualified than anyone to talk about the subject of political correctness in American and Britain."

The student society at the University of Cambridge wants Savage to speak for the opposition in an Oct. 15 debate titled "This House Believes Political Correctness is Sane and Necessary." If there is no change in his legal status before the debate, the letter states, he could address the society via a live video link.

The society presidents told Savage in their letter "the decision to ban you has caused quite a stir and we are keen to know how your situation progresses, especially now that Jacqui Smith has resigned from Cabinet."

Savage has procured the Internet domain MichaelSavage.co.uk to offer U.K. residents an easy way to visit his website. All visitors from the U.K. who hit that destination are automatically transported to Savage's main website.

"If I am not welcome in the United Kingdom, I want the people there to know I bear no ill will toward them for the extremely misguided and hateful actions of their government," said Savage. "So this is my way of inviting them to visit me – on my home turf."

Savage is believed to be the most highly educated nationally syndicated radio talk show host in the nation, with a master's degree in medical botany and a second in medical anthropology. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in epidemiology and nutrition sciences.
