Will of the puppets

The events unfolded in the dead of night this weekend and were characterized by Speaker Pelosi as "the will of the people." It was more like the will of the puppets! It's the will of puppets who walk in constant fear of "Nancy the Terrible" who runs Congress with fear and intimidation – puppets who no longer fear the people.

Nancy has elevated the breaking of arms and knee caps to an art form that would make Tonya Harding jealous. If Tom DeLay was known as the "hammer," after two years as speaker, Nancy should be known as the "sledgehammer."

A full 219 puppets and one loon from Louisiana passed the 1,990-page bill on a strict partisan vote. The speaker broke her promised 72-hour posting of the bill on the Internet. Not that it would have made any difference given only a speed reader is capable of reading it before the vote. The speaker and her puppets once again did as they pleased.

This makes No. 3 for the speaker in her legislative "victories for the American people." First, it was a $787 billion pork-laden stimulus bill that has done little but drive unemployment from 7.3 percent to 10.2 percent. Then came cap and trade, designed to save the planet and tax anyone who breathes. And now it's "historic health-care reform," complete with a $1.2 trillion price tag for the taxpayers.

Is it just me, or does anyone notice a huge missing piece?

This bill does nothing to reduce the costs associated with the medical malpractice lawsuits that cost billions each year. It does nothing to allow insurance companies to compete over state lines. It doesn't even stop illegal aliens from participating in the so-called public option. And if Rep. Stupak had not stepped in, it would have spent taxpayer dollars to fund abortion.

What this bill does accomplish, however, is startling and, in some cases, terrifying.

This bill contains complete sections that significantly reduce Medicare benefits. It taxes existing health-care benefits for millions of Americans and increases taxes on the middle class. It employs the word "shall" more than 3,400 times in 1,990 pages. Almost twice on every page you shall do something – or else.

This isn't about choice. It is about doing what you are told or being handed a fine and/or a jail term.

Anyone with a basic understanding of insurance understands it requires more people paying in than taking out in order for it to survive – more healthy than sick people, more safe drivers than unsafe, more dry homes than flooded. The risk of the few is spread out amongst the many. It is the only way for pooled risk to work.

Only a Democrat would believe that we can insure all people – sick and healthy alike – even people with pre-existing conditions, and pay for all of it. What an incredibly foolish notion. Government-run or private, insurance companies cannot pay out more than they take in. Liberals think an entity can pay out more than it takes in and still stay in business. But hey, they also think this bill is deficit neutral.

Liberals can believe these fantasies because all they have to do to see them realized is just raise taxes. Only on the rich, right? Not this time. Even the middle class gets whacked. So much for Mr. Obama's promise.

Nancy and her puppets will just make sure to keep doing what they do best: raise taxes. This new taxation will start next year to pay for all of this by 2013. Nancy and her gang have promised not to spend any of the money they receive today until 2013. Yeah right! Our government is incapable of keeping its hands off a stockpile. Anything that comes in between now and 2013 will go straight toward something in immediate need of funding. If you believe any differently, I have four words for you: Social Security Trust Fund.

Is it any wonder why we now have an $11-trillion national debt projected to reach $21 trillion in the next 10 years? Nancy and her puppets took control of Congress in 2006. Since then the deficit has exploded as a result of her "working for the American people" and George Bush's inability to use a veto pen.

On Nov. 7, we were handed a Saturday Night Special from the speaker – one pointed right at the American economy and the American people. We must hope thoughtful minds will prevail in the Senate and this bill will go through a huge change. Harry Reid is no sledgehammer, and short of a handful of liberals, our senators are no puppets. Joe Lieberman has been both brave and patriotic enough to state publicly he will not allow this to go through as it is. Don't expect a puppet outcome in the Senate.

So let Sledgehammer Pelosi enjoy her victory for the moment. She may have crammed this down the throats of her puppets, but she hasn't fooled the American people. We know this is not our will. Her saying it is doesn't make is so.

Now, 2010 is right around the corner. May I suggest the sledgehammer start looking for a new line of work?
