In a previous column in this space, I chose the title "Welcome to the nightmare." I referred to the wholesale, escalating breakdown of all restraint in our country – economic, political, social and moral. None of the various particulars were unknown, but I wanted to paint a broad picture of how universal and comprehensive seems the surrender of everything that used to hold this great nation together, and gave it our unprecedented character.
It's long been attributed to the sociologist/historian Alexis de Tocqueville, after he'd traveled through our still-fledgling America and had observed how we lived and what motivated us, "America is great because she is good. If she ceases to be good, she will cease to be great."
He was right; he was prophetic; and it is happening all around us.
We, frankly and realistically, have been ruined economically and corrupted politically.
So it's no surprise that, having lost our constitutional bearings and much of the Judeo-Christian principles that birthed that document, we are now being corrupted socially and morally, at what seems warp speed. Virtually every moral taboo has been discarded, and almost every decadent behavior is now portrayed nightly on television, in our wildly promoted movies and in rampant profusion on the undisciplined Internet.

The basic institution of the family is under unprecedented attack, some mindlessly and some intentionally. After all, the modular, traditional family, a father and mother and kids, is the very core of society, of the human race itself. Many modernists see that as a hindrance, an obstacle to the announced goal of "a brave new world," a society hymned famously by John Lennon in his "Imagine" anthem, in which there are no rules, no religion, only peaceable, loving people allowed to live, grow and do whatever they wish. Another impossibility, since it is only rules, structure and time-honored religious guidelines that have ever created and held a healthy society together.
History proves, over and over, that humanity left to its own natural leanings inevitably degenerates into confusion, immorality, factions, hostility, depravity, war and destruction. A few attempts have apparently succeeded for a while, but natural inclinations always triumph over altruism in the end.
And so the family is rapidly being torn apart, sabotaged and threatened with extinction – increasingly by those who are commissioned to protect and promote it! Are you not aware of it?
Well, let James Dobson inform you.
There has been no more vocal, effective and rational defender of marriage and family in our time than Dr. James Dobson, author of "Dare To Discipline" and many other books on raising and nurturing children, and the founder of Focus on the Family, the pre-eminent source for helpful instruction on how family works ideally.
He has recently devoted his time and energy to a new entity, "Family Talk," on hundreds of radio stations, and a regular newsletter. And he's sounding an urgent alarm to families across America, in effect, "Moms and Dads, if you care at all about your kids and America's future, you've got to wake up, take back our schools and our government, or we're finished!"
As one example in his latest newsletter, he recounts incidents in California schools that are so despicable, they defy belief. In Oakland, a teacher at Markham Elementary School was recently suspended indefinitely after school officials said a pair of second-graders performed sex acts on each other in class – with the teacher present!
Troy Flint, spokesman for Oakland's Unified School District, admitted to CBS Channel 5 that this was one of several incidents "under investigation," including another in which several students allegedly took off all their clothes and, naked, a boy and girl engaged in oral sex – in front of their classmates. Again, while the teacher watched. In a public elementary school!
Principal Pam Booker offered an apology of sorts to the stunned parents, saying "I understand there is great anger over this news." Oh, really? Just "anger" over the shocking spectacle of 7-year-old children stripping naked and engaging in sex acts in front of their classmates and the teacher, who, instead of being immediately arrested, is merely "indefinitely suspended"?
Mr. Flint is quoted in another article, "Children have a natural curiosity about the human body, and they're prone to exploration. But, of course, we have to work with children to make sure they understand there's a proper time, place and manner to do so."
Do you think these incidents are just isolated and infrequent? Consider a Dr. Stuart Lustig, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at UC San Francisco, saying that sexual "play" among children – even though worrisome to adults – is not uncommon, even at a very early age. "They do experiment with each other's bodies. It's part of normal development." He even said, "Oral sex is not as common, and probably more concerning."
Just West Coast decadence? Dobson reported last July that the Helena School District considered a proposal to extend sex education to children as young as kindergarten age! Fox News reported that the 62-page draft proposed that 3-to-6-year-olds be taught proper terms like "nipple, breast, penis, scrotum and uterus." Then in first grade, they should learn that sexual relations could happen between two men or two women, and by the time they're 10, instruction should include various ways people can have intercourse, be it vaginally, orally or through anal penetration.
Are you ready for this to be national policy? Well, this administration and most of the teachers unions are. President Obama personally appointed Kevin Jennings to a constitutionally unauthorized position as "safe schools czar". He's not only a longtime homosexual activist who has worked for just such "instruction" in our schools as that described above, but who wrote a very complimentary foreword to his friend's book on pedophilia, the sexual seduction of children. This is the president's idea of a "safe school czar"!
Friend, if we let this continue, America is indeed finished. And deservedly. I implore you to visit www.Myfamilytalk.com, www.focusonthefamily.com, www.ParentsTV.org and www.NationForMarriage.org and become armed with information and concerted strategy to save our children, our future.
Our president has just announced he and his Justice Department will defy our law, his presidential oath and the will of the people by not defending the Defense of Marriage Act.
It's up to us now, the people … as it was meant to be.
