Just four days before President Obama was scheduled to speak inside the Washington National Cathedral to observe the tenth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, a 500-foot crane doing repair work collapsed today, leaving a haunting image of a giant cross.
A giant cross can be seen in the aftermath of a giant crane collapse at the Washington National Cathedral Sept. 7, 2011. |
"The crane did not collapse on the cathedral itself," cathedral spokeswoman Meredith MacKenzie told the Washington Times.
The heavy-duty machinery was on site at the church to help with damage caused by last month's 5.8-magnitude East Coast earthquake.
The Times reports Rev. Simone Bautista, canon for Latino ministries at the diocese, was inside the Church House when the crane fell, saying it "sounded like big thunder. Then the office started shaking."
"When things like that happen and don't hurt as much as it could," he said, "there's something divine out there that prevented that from happening."
Fox News reported today that regarding this Sunday's 9/11 anniversary memorial, no Christian evangelical organization was invited to participate, despite the inclusion of a Buddhist nun and an Islamic imam.Â
"It's not surprising," said Frank Page, president of the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee. "There is a tragic intolerance toward Protestants and particularly toward evangelicals and I wish the president would refuse to speak unless it was more representative."
The cross image is reminiscent of the cross that emerged from twisted metal at Ground Zero after the collapse of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.
