Randi Goldklank, general manager of Boston's WHDH-TV

The general manager of an aggressive Boston TV news station has been put on leave for her own obscenity-packed, explosive behavior at Logan International Airport.

Randi Goldklank, 40, of NBC affiliate WHDH Channel 7 was arrested Sunday night as officers responded to a report that Goldklank was an unruly passenger aboard an incoming Delta Air Lines flight.

The woman allegedly had a strong smell of alcohol when she unloaded a torrent of vicious invective, threatening and punching police, even breaking an officer's eyeglasses.

According to the Massachusetts State Police incident report, Goldklank told police:

  • "Leave me alone, do you know who the (expletive) I am? I'll have a news crew down here in minutes and you will lose your (expletive) jobs you (expletives)."
  • "I'm a big shot in Boston and I'll have your (expletive) jobs, you think your (sic) a (expletive) tough guy, you just watch and see what the (expletive) happens to you when I get the (expletive) out of here."
  • "My station is going to put you on TV and ruin your life."
  • "You think I'm cute and I think your (sic) cute, just drive me home."

Goldklank faces a host of charges, including assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

WHDH released a statement noting its general manager had been placed on leave, which "is subject to further review by management."

Goldklank's attorney, David Eisenstadt, said, "as an attorney, it is not my practice to litigate these matters in the press. I think the process should play itself out and I'm confident my client will be well-served by the justice system."

The police report indicates the executive was overheard saying she had "about three dozen drinks earlier" and was taking the drug Lexapro for depression.

But Goldklank denied that claim, telling the Boston Herald she had not been drinking alcohol before or during the flight.

Her version of events differs from that of police, as she claims about 15 minutes into the flight, as she slept, a male passenger put his hands in an "inappropriate area."

According to Goldklank, when she felt his hand, she asked him, "What are you doing?" She said the man responded, "Doesn't that feel good?"

Goldklank told the Herald she then yelled at the man to "please leave the seat," and the man left.

"Maybe I said it too loud," she said.

She claims she called a flight attendant and "got upset about it," as the attendant told her to calm down.

Police say Goldklank never mentioned any incident in flight involving another passenger.

"To date, state police have received no complaint from the defendant about being indecently assaulted on the plane," said state police spokesman David Procopio.

Goldklank could face repercussions if she indeed threatened to sic her TV news crews on the troopers.

"If the police report is accurate, it is completely inappropriate and I can't imagine any station allowing a journalist to stay employed, much less a manager," said Al Tompkins of the Poynter Institute.

"We should never use our position as journalists or as media leaders to intimidate or bully or seek special treatment or special access," he added.
