An Indianapolis, Ind., police officer has been charged with rape, criminal deviate conduct and other crimes after he allegedly pulled a woman over and threatened arrest if she didn't get into his car.

Officer Anthony S. Smith, 36, was suspended without pay Monday following a complaint that he sexually assaulted a 19-year-old woman Friday, the Indianapolis Star reported. A SWAT team arrested Smith at his home today.

The officer stopped the teenager outside of a gas station and accused her of driving without a valid license, according to an affidavit. Smith told her there was a warrant out for her arrest.

"I'm going to give you an option. I can lock you up, but I really don't want to," Smith reportedly said. "or you can ride with me for an hour."

The woman obeyed Smith and got into his patrol car. She said he threatened to arrest her if she refused to have sex with him.

"Things don't get much worse than this case," Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Chief Michael Spears said at a news conference. "These allegations are horrific. ... This officer used his authority and position, allegedly, to satisfy his own desires."

According to the Star, authorities charged Smith with seven felonies today including rape, criminal deviate conduct, sexual misconduct and official misconduct and two misdemeanor counts of intimidation.

He eventually confessed to having sex with the teen, but he told authorities she consented. Smith denied threatening her with jail.

Smith's case is the newest of several arrests of Indianapolis officers this year. Cops have faced charges such as organizing a prostitution ring, selling firearms to felons, drunken driving and drug trafficking.
