McCain-Palin: The wasted vote

It is remarkable how many "conservative" commentators, who completely failed to see the credit crunch coming or anticipate its consequences, nevertheless did not hesitate to inform Americans that it was absolutely necessary to provide 5 percent of GDP – $700 billion – to an unelected economics czar who was one of the men primarily responsible for the crisis in the first place. In light of this, there are three things to keep in mind as you contemplate the unveiling of corporate socialism in America:

    1. The bailout, or "rescue" if you prefer, will not work. Economic contraction always follows economic expansion, and even heroic efforts to eliminate the business cycle will do no more than delay and exacerbate the inevitable recession.

    2. Electing Republicans will not solve the problem. President George Bush, Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin all supported H.R. 1424: A bill to provide authority for the federal government to purchase and insure certain types of troubled assets for the purposes of providing stability to and preventing disruption in the economy and financial system. It is also intended to protect taxpayers, to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to provide incentives for energy production and conservation, to extend certain expiring provisions, to provide individual income tax relief and for other purposes.

    3. This crisis was not a surprise; it was both inevitable and predictable.

As proof that my analysis is correct, I offer the evidence of my past columns here at WorldNetDaily:

All that two decades of frantic bailing out and bubble blowing has accomplished is to enrich a few fortunate investors and delay the inevitable, while significantly jacking up the terrible price Americans will ultimately pay. The business cycle can be influenced, but it cannot be eliminated. For every economic action, there will be an equal and opposite reaction. Since the financial house of cards has been built ever higher and ever more vulnerable during this decades-long period of delay, chances are very high that the collapse will be swifter and more brutal than even the economic pessimists can currently envision. This is far from a failure of the free markets; it is merely more evidence of the futility of central economic planning.

The United States is fast approaching an interesting juncture in which the nation will be forced to choose between rebuilding its wealth with a functional free-market system or sinking under the weight of an increasingly dysfunctional, centralized economic system. For decades, the powers that be in Washington, D.C., and New York have favored the latter, which benefited them in the short term at the price of collective devastation in the long term. Unfortunately, the long term appears to be upon us at last.

Since the Republican Party has dedicated itself to racing its Democratic rivals in offering more bread and circuses to the underprivileged masses, there is no longer any reason for conservatives to support it. Disenchanted and dismayed Republicans will do well to remember these pragmatic betrayals of conservative principle when the most important election of our lifetime rolls around again three years from now.

"The coming conservative collapse," Sept. 19, 2005

For many years, conservatives and other freedom lovers have placed their trust in the Republican Party, hoping it would fulfill its promises to return America to its national birthright of freedom and individual liberty. Those promises, unsurprisingly, were broken by the party of Abraham Lincoln, who is most famous for converting what had been a voluntary Union of free association into a forced Union by military might. Any last vestiges of hope in the Republican Party have been shattered by the current regime, wherein a Republican president, Republican House, Republican Senate and Republican-nominated Supreme Court have demonstrated they have zero interest in the timeless vision of America's founders. Supporting them in the hopes that they will revive American liberties is akin to hoping shock paddles will suffice to revive a month-old corpse. American freedom is not only dead, it has been rotting for some time.

"You can't fix a corpse," July 12, 2004

It would be a massive mistake for conservatives, libertarians and capitalists to continue supporting Republicans when there is clearly nothing conservative, libertarian or capitalist about the Republican Party. The Republican Party does not value freedom, it does not value capitalism, it does not abide by its republican principles and it does not honor the Constitution. Regardless of whether you vote Libertarian, Constitution Party or do not vote at all, you can be sure that your vote will not be wasted. – because, as events have proven time and time again over the last eight years, the only wasted vote is the vote that is cast for a Republican politician.
