McCain shame

I couldn't feel more validated about my "None of the Above" campaign in the 2008 election than I have since John McCain began behaving just as I would expect him to behave in defeat.

Even though I acknowledged in my book and countless columns before the election that Barack Obama was the least qualified and most dangerous candidate ever to run for the presidency, I did not support his opponent. I could not bring myself to do so after watching McCain's shameless, unprincipled and indefensible actions over the last decade.

Long ago, I concluded that the most dangerous place to be in a fight was right behind John McCain – because sooner or later, he was going to run on you.

True to form, on election night, McCain was obsequious to Barack Obama. It couldn't have been a more pathetic sight if McCain had bowed down and worshipped Obama that night.

And, also true to form, within days, McCain's surrogates were finger-pointing and playing the blame game on his running mate, Sarah Palin.

Now, I have to tell you, I didn't support this ticket. That's no secret. But I liked Palin. I still like Palin. In fact, I think McCain would have been blown out of the race long ago without the support and energy Palin brought to the ticket.

(Column continues below)

Deep in the shadows, unnamed McCain aides are calling Palin a "whack-job" who went "rogue," a "diva" who ran up huge campaign debts.

For starters, if one of those sissies were man enough to go on the record, I would ask him what those stories say about the McCain camp's ability to select and vet a running mate. If the McCain camp made such a lousy choice of a vice-presidential candidate, what does that say about their instincts and abilities?

But, of course, the gutter snipes won't step into the light. They don't have the courage to say these things to Sarah Palin's face. What does that tell you about them?

And, don't for one moment think these attacks on Palin are being made without the approval and express authorization of John McCain.

This is vintage McCain. This is how he operates.

If McCain didn't believe what his spineless, wimpy little proxies were putting out there for public consumption, he has had more than ample opportunity to set the record straight.

Has he called a press conference to condemn these vicious slurs?

No.

Has he put out a press release about his undying gratitude for the role played by Palin?

No.

Has he told anyone – anyone – in the press that these gossipers and rumormongers don't represent his views?

No.

I have waited days to write this column, hoping McCain would prove me wrong. I didn't expect it, but I didn't want my admittedly jaded views of McCain to permit me to jump the gun.

I don't think it's possible McCain could have missed the tempest his cronies have created with regard to Palin – even while their master sucks up to Obama. Is this man looking for a Cabinet position in the new Democratic administration? I wouldn't be a bit surprised.

McCain is a mean-spirited turncoat who can be trusted only to be a mean-spirited turncoat.

I knew that.

I knew McCain did not represent a viable alternative even to the corrupt, inept and evil Obama.

Now I have no regrets about my "None of the Above" position. At least I did not actively participate in the evil charade of a presidential election in 2008. My conscience is clear.

And, because of McCain's vile assault on Palin, I'm more persuaded than ever that she must be the real deal. Far from being hurt by these attacks, in my eyes, she's got more cojones than anyone else associated with that McCain campaign.
