PETITION FOR PRESIDENTIAL PARDON
OF IMPRISONED U.S. BORDER PATROL AGENTS
A petition urging President Bush, before he leaves office, to grant a full and complete presidential pardon for imprisoned U.S. Border Patrol agents Ignacia Ramos and Jose Compean
Whereas, according to the United States Constitution, Article 2, Section 2, the president "shall have Power to Grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States";
Whereas, two U.S. Border Patrol agents, Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, are now serving outrageously long prison terms for shooting and wounding, in the line of duty, a fleeing illegal alien drug smuggler trying to bring almost 800 pounds of marijuana into the U.S.;
Whereas, the government prosecutor gave the drug smuggler full immunity from prosecution in return for testifying against the Border Patrol agents;
Whereas, Ramos and Compean were convicted and sentenced to 11 and 12 years respectively under a law requiring a minimum 10-year sentence for the use of a firearm in the commission of a crime - a law Congress never intended to apply to law enforcement officers;
Whereas, after the trial, several jurors complained they had been intimidated into voting "guilty" while actually believing Ramos and Compean were innocent, yet the judge refused to set the verdict aside;
Whereas, Ramos and Compean have already served almost two years in prison, mostly in solitary confinement, subjecting their wives and children to extreme emotional and financial hardship;
Whereas, the imprisonment of the two agents and the destitution of their families has demoralized the rest of the U.S. Border Patrol - America's first line of defense against the massive and uncontrolled influx of illegal aliens into the U.S.;
Whereas, numerous U.S. senators and representatives, along with millions of Americans outraged at what is widely perceived as a grave injustice, are championing the cause of the imprisoned agents and urging a presidential pardon:

SIGN THE PETITION
We, the undersigned, assert our rights as citizens of the United States in urging that President George W. Bush exercise his constitutional power of pardon - so often used to free undeserving drug dealers, con men and even terrorists - to pardon U.S. Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean immediately, reinstating their positions and reuniting them with their suffering families.
