The Bible under onslaught of attacks

In case you haven't noticed, we're living in a very strange time.

It's a time when evil is celebrated as good, and good is condemned as evil, as predicted by the prophet Isaiah.

Even the Holy Bible is under attack as never before. Just recently, Newsweek magazine featured a cover story suggesting the Bible has no problem with same-sex marriage, sparking Bible defenders to fire back.

Newsweek's Dec. 15, 2008, issue

"Perhaps part of the reason for such lunacy is that many people are simply unaware of what's actually included in the Bible," says Joe Kovacs, author of "Shocked by the Bible: The Most Astonishing Facts You've Never Been Told."

"Had Newsweek been completely honest, it would have stated the Bible is consistently against homosexuality. The Good Book not only states same-sex relations are an abomination in the Book of Leviticus – verses which Newsweek calls 'throwaway lines' – it addresses the subject in numerous places in both the Old and New Testament."

Just perusing the Book of 1 Kings, for instance, there are several mentions of "sodomites," long after the city of Sodom was completely destroyed by God:

  • And there were also sodomites in the land: and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which the LORD cast out before the children of Israel. (14:24)
  • And Asa did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, as did David his father. And he took away the sodomites out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made. (15:11-12)
  • And the remnant of the sodomites, which remained in the days of his father Asa, [King Jehoshaphat] took out of the land. (22:46)

The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary defines sodomites as those who practice sodomy, explaining the word directly derives "from the homosexual proclivities of the men of the city in Genesis 19:1-11."

The New Testament brings up Sodom quite often, with examples such as:

"Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire." (Jude 1:7, KJV)

And the Apostle Paul noted:

"Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other. And the men, instead of having normal sexual relationships with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men and, as a result, suffered within themselves the penalty they so richly deserved." (Romans 1:26-27, NLT)

Isn't it time once again to get familiar with the words of Scripture? There's a whole lot more in there than just God loving the world and sending His Son to give believers everlasting life.

"Why not make 2009 the year to champion Bible truth?" says Kovacs. "It's time to put an end to ancient fables, misconceptions and distortions of God's Word. All people need to do is crack open their own Bibles and see the words on the pages. They'll be stunned."

In "Shocked by the Bible," Kovacs explains that if people just read for themselves without any preconceived notions, they'd quickly discover:

  • "Three Wise Men" are never mentioned in the story of Jesus' birth, and no wise men at all are shown present at the manger scene the night Jesus was born. (They showed up later at a house when Jesus was a young child)
  • Jesus did not come to make everyone understand His message, and personally said so
  • The Bible never outright declares the day, month, year or even season Jesus was born.
  • There's no mention of a Christmas tree or any tree in the gospels recording Jesus' birth. However, there is a custom mentioned in the Old Testament that shows people decorating trees with silver and gold. You might be astounded to find out what God says about such a practice.
  • The Bible never says Jesus died on a Friday or rose from the grave Sunday morning
  • Noah brought a lot more than just two of certain animals aboard the Ark
  • The word "Easter" vanished from modern Bible translations
  • God sought to kill Moses, shortly after telling him to lead the Israelites to freedom
  • Jesus made personal appearances in the Old Testament
  • The worst case of hemorrhoids in history is recorded

And these are merely the beginning of hundreds of facts that will stun even those who thought they had a strong knowledge of the Bible and history.

"If you've never been into the Bible, or even if you have, there's no need to fear," says Kovacs. "I make it quick, easy and fun for you to find out the juiciest, most interesting stuff that never seems to get mentioned in church. And I'm not talking about trivial facts and difficult names no one can pronounce."

Kovacs was recently a guest on the Rusty Humphries radio show to shatter misconceptions many people have about the Bible.
