Las Vegas Sands Surfs The Macau Wave Of Growth

Las Vegas Sands recently reported its 1Q 2013 earnings. The company attracted a record number of tourists and saw a 20% surge in revenues led by accelerated growth in Macau. While Sands China reported close to 40% growth in revenues for the first quarter, Singapore revenues declined despite a 40% increase in rolling chip volumes. Although Cotai Central was the new attraction in Macau, it was the company's iconic property The Venetian Macau that continued to attract more tourists. Going forward, we expect the company to continue to do well at the Cotai strip. Given how quickly the Macau gaming market is growing, Las Vegas Sands plans to continue to expand in this region and will develop a new gaming zone of 40,000 sq. ft.

The Las Vegas, Nevada office of PricewaterhouseCoopers resigned April 23 as auditor of casino company Las Vegas Sands, according to an SEC filing. PwC has been signing the opinion for Las Vegas Sands since its IPO in 2004. A Wall Street Journal anonymous source says "the legal and regulatory scrutiny of Las Vegas Sands was "the overriding issue" behind PwC's resignation. Personal tension between Mr. Adelson and the accounting firm also played a role." An LVS spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal PwC worked for LVS Chairman and CEO Sheldon Adelson for twenty-five years.

Stocks are opening higher, with the S&P 500 up 0.5% Monday morning. The market looks to close out its sixth straight positive month. After an impressive five-day bounce off the 50-day moving average, the S&P 500 rested on Thursday and Friday, which is healthy. On Friday, we saw the market shrug off a weak GDP reading, that also included very weak expectations for GDP growth next quarter as the sequester cuts come to roost. Combine that with a weak jobs report last month and the economic picture right now is not pretty, but the market doesn't seem to care.
