Although stocks rallied in mid-day trading, they couldn’t hang on to the surge and fell back towards breakeven to close out Tuesday’s session. The Dow managed to finish up by 0.1% but the broader indexes were not so lucky as the S&P 500 fell by 0.2% and the Nasdaq sank by 0.9%. Utilities and health care led on the upside while basic materials, some large cap tech, and a few big name financials led the way on the downside. In terms of commodities, the headline products of gold and oil both finished the day higher as gold rose by about 1.5% and oil gained about 55 cents a barrel or 0.6%. The Dow finished lower by 0.4% while the S&P 500 slumped by 0.7% and the Nasdaq fell even further, dropping by 1.2% on the day. American equity markets once again finished the day lower, marking the sixth straight session in the red for U.S. benchmarks. The Dow slumped by 22 points while the S&P and Nasdaq posted heavier losses of, respectively, 0.4% and 1.0% on the session. The biggest losers came in the tech and financial sectors as banks slumped on a government ruling on fees and tech fell pretty much across the board. Meanwhile, in commodity markets, gold finished the day flat while crude oil gained close to 2% after an OPEC meeting in Vienna saw no increases to production from the cartel. Other resources also finished the day broadly higher as the soft commodities put up multi-percentage point gains including a 3.7% surge in the corn market. Although markets rose modestly in the first two hours of trading, they soon slumped back and finished the day markedly lower to start the week. The Dow finished the day down by 0.4% while the S&P 500 suffered greater losses of 0.6%. However, these declines were modest compared to the tumble in the Nasdaq, as the tech-heavy benchmark slid more than 1.6% on the day thanks to a nearly 3% slide from Oracle and a 2% tumble from both Google and Apple. Commodity markets also slumped to start the week as gold retreated marginally and oil continued its recent spat of weakness, selling off by 2.6% in the session. Although markets dipped to start Tuesday trading, they soon erased their early losses and powered ahead to solid gains for the session. The Dow and the S&P 500 both finished ahead by 0.7% while the tech-heavy Nasdaq soared higher by just under 1% thanks to strength from AT&T, Qualcomm, and Oracle. Commodity markets also generally trended higher as oil rose by 72 cents a barrel and copper rose by ten cents a pound. However, investors did slice away a small amount from precious metals on the day as gold fell by about $2.7/oz. and silver retreated by one cent in the session. U.S. equity markets finished the last day of February on a high note as most stocks finished the day in the green as oil continued its sell off and U.S. worker income rose by 1% for January. The Dow finished up by 96 points on the day while the S&P 500 rose by 0.6% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq gained just one point as weakness in the semiconductor space dragged down the popular market. Commodity markets were more mixed, however, as gold rose by just $2/oz. and oil fell by close to one dollar a barrel thanks to easing tensions across the Middle East. Despite continued tension in the Middle East, American equities managed to finish the day flat thanks to strong earnings reports and sliding oil prices. The Dow declined by 37 points while the S&P 500 fell by a single point, however, the Nasdaq managed to post a decent gain on the day, rising by just under 0.6%. Commodity markets suffered more severe losses on the day as worries over the revolt in North Africa spreading to Saudi Arabia declined sending gold down by 1.2% and oil plunging by 2.3%. Most other commodities followed the lead of these two headliners as grains and softs fell across the board with especially rough losses coming in the silver (down 4.1%), and the cotton (down 3.9%) markets.
