October may have started off well in the markets, but after a series of poor earning reports major equity indexes went into a tail spin, landing much lower than many expected to be. Many of the new ETFs that were proposed earlier this year are now finally coming to market, offering unique and potentially profitable investment options; October saw the debut of the newest actively managed fund, as well as an interesting “core” lineup aimed towards long-term investors [for updates on all new ETFs, sign up for the free ETFdb newsletter]. IndexIQ, the firm behind some of the first hedge fund replication ETFs, expanded its lineup last week with the debut of another product designed to deliver low volatility and low correlations to traditional asset classes. The IQ Hedge Market Neutral Tracker ETF (QMN) will seek to replicate an index that consists of both long and short positions in asset classes while minimizing exposure to systematic risk. With only a month left until the U.S. general election, every financial report that comes out will be under even more scrutiny and press coverage than usual. This week’s unemployment report was no exception as unemployment fell to 7.8%, its lowest level since January 2009, and every columnist had their own opinion on which candidate will benefit from this bright outlook.
