Though the year is still very young, 2012 has gotten off to a promising start for investors. Major stock indexes have generally climbed higher throughout the first few weeks thanks to a number of encouraging data releases and reduced anxiety over the potential fallout from the European debt crisis [see also Early ETF Stars of 2012]. The second half of last year saw a flight among investors to safer securities, including utilities and dividend stocks. 2011 has been arguably one the busiest ever for the ETF industry, as we are on pace to break through 300 new launches for the year. June was another interesting month for markets around the world as a number of important events transpired over the past few weeks. The Federal Reserve meeting came and went without much of a hitch as Bernanke called for the end of QE at the end of the month but suggested that the economy was still too weak to consider raising rates any time soon. While this was undoubtedly an important event, investors focused in on the euro zone and the ongoing debt crisis rocking many of the peripheral members. The focus was especially on Greece, as Athens debated on the merits of another round of austerity measures before voting them in by a slim five vote margin in the final days of June. ETF Insider: Beating The Market In A Rocky Week

This past week was another rocky one for global markets as worries over Greece temporarily subsided in the middle of the week only to reappear in Friday trading. This resurgence came as a result of several members of Parliament declaring their intentions to vote against the austerity bill, leaving the measure uncertain to pass to say the least. Investors also focused on worries over Italian debt and banks in Italy as well; some are fearing that a credit downgrade is coming not only to the largest banks in the nation but to the country itself as well. Thanks to these fears over a contagion spreading to one of the world’s ten largest economies, many investors were running for cash before the bell to close out the week. EGShares Launches Suite Of Emerging Market Sector ETFs

Emerging Global, the New York City-based ETF issuer best known for its funds that target consumers and infrastructure in developing nations, rolled out the latest addition to its product lineup Thursday with the debut of nine GEMS (Global Emerging Markets Sectors) funds. The lineup offers investors the chance to buy some of the largest companies in the world that are based in emerging markets in each of the ten market sectors, as well as a composite fund that represents all of the individual market segments. In total, the lineup consists of 11 ETFs; three are rebranded products and eight are brand new ETFs, nearly doubling the total number of funds that the company is offering. All of the eleven funds will track Dow Jones Emerging Markets Titans indexes, which are benchmarks that include the 30 largest companies in each sector across various emerging nations.
