By integrating the newly launched Tango software development kit (SDK) into their own applications, mobile publishers will be able to add a social layer into their apps meant to better reflect users’ real-world connections with family and friends. Gameloft is the first of a dozen or so launch partners to debut apps using the new Tango platform. Gameloft will soon be releasing an app in called “Candy Block Breaker for Tango” on iOS, and that will be then followed by “JetPack Jinx for Tango,” developed by Bubble Gum Interactive. This is a major move for the mobile social communications service, Tango, which has been steadily transforming itself from just a video calling app to rival Skype into something that more closely resembles a mobile social network. Already, users could call, video chat, text, leave voicemails and video messages, and even play games within Tango’s mobile application, but this is the first time the company has made access to its so-called “social graph” to other applications. According to Tango CEO Eric Setton, Tango users have been playing tens of millions of games within the app every month – something that would see the app ranked toward the top of the app store charts if it called itself a mobile game, he says. “But we found that we can’t do everything we want to inside the app, in terms of putting out the most compelling content out there and presenting it to our members,” Setton explains, “so we basically becoming a bottleneck.” With the new Tango SDK, the idea is to create an experience that’s more like playing games in the real world – like during a family board game night, for instance. However, though the initial partnerships are on the mobile gaming side of things, Tango’s SDK will be open to developers of any kind of app looking to to add a social layer. The SDK allows the third-party apps to connect with its network, pull down a list of friends, and then allow those users to message each other using text, picture and video, similar to how things work in Tango itself. It also includes social leaderboards, which shows how users’ scores compare with friends, and it allows for both competitive and collaborative in-game mechanics. For example, app]]> <![CDATA[Tango built its video chat empire. Now it’s taking on the mobile gaming market]]>

This means that apps for Windows 8 PCs and tablets that run AMD processors can start including photo editing immediately. The company has already gotten serious traction by being included within Flickr, Twitter, Photobucket and thousands of other apps, so Windows 8 was a logical move for them. The collaboration is actually backed by an investment from AMD Ventures, which came in its last round. AMD would clearly love to see popular photo apps crop up on the Windows platform. Since social photo editing is such a popular behavior on the web these days, not having a platform to easily deploy the feature within apps left a massive hole in the Windows app store. To pump up the partnership, Manju Hegde, an AMD VP, referred to Aviary as “the standard in mobile and online photo editing,” something we’ve said about the company before. As far as the investment, Hegde shared “AMD is committed to supporting the future of industry changing innovators like Aviary, through investment by AMD Ventures and by enhancing user experiences on our award-winning APU platforms.” AMD was involved in Aviary’s last funding round, which also included Spark and Bezos Expeditions, so these resources have clearly come to fruition. The SDK for Windows 8 is available now and comes with enough documentation and examples to shake a stick at. Aviary also has released its first Windows 8 app through the Windows Store to showcase the features and functionality of the Aviary SDK for Windows 8. The company has also launched a photo editor itself in the Windows Store, to show off the type of functionality that developers can now leverage for their own apps. Aviary says that with the AMD APUs, effects can be processed up to 16X faster than on other processors, an advantage of working directly with AMD. Said Aviary CEO, Tobias Peggs: AMD’s APUs allow us to enable the most processor-intensive photo effects we have ever been able to offer. They’ve helped to push our technology forward, and in turn, end users can push the limits of their creativity even further. Along with Windows 8, Aviary’s SDK is available for iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7 and HTML5. Rather than build a consumer-facing app, the company decided to build a platform that allows other networks to include its photo-editing suite. It was a brilliant play and has paid off, as Aviary has announced that its platform has edited over 3 billion photos. Editing those photos are 35 million active users from 3,500 partners using the Aviary SDK. The impressive part of this milestone is that it doesn’t even include all of the photos edited with Twitter’s integration, which went into effect last December. One could assume that Twitter didn’t want its numbers leaking out with the rest. A little over a month ago, Photobucket went all in and started using Aviary’s platform, as well. Add Flickr, and all of a sudden you’re getting a picture of just what type of damage Aviary can do in the space. Recently appointed CEO Tobias Peggs had this to say about Aviary’s ridiculous growth curve: There’s no doubt that those numbers have surpassed our wildest expectations. In our first year, users edited 1 billion photos. In the past 6 months, they’ve edited 2 billion more. Our active monthly user count is now over 35 million people strong, and they have collectively spent 3,804 years editing photos with Aviary. This is how the past few months have looked: To kick up more dust for SDK adoption, Aviary will be holding a Photo Hack Day on April 6th at Facebook’s Menlo Park campus. Details on that aren’t available yet, but when you’re a developer looking to focus on building an app instead of having to focus on photo-editing tools such as filters, cropping and auto-brightness, those development cycles can speed up and apps will get shipped faster. I’ve followed Aviary’s progress over the past 18 months and can’t help but wonder how Adobe feels, as its Photoshop product could have easily been packaged up and offered in an SDK, thus earning it the spot that Aviary has grabbed. When companies move slow or lack forward thinking, new names can emerge and grab a market. Aviary has grabbed the mobile photo-editing market, and it’s a huge one. The Maps iOS SDK, which was released at the time of the Google Maps iOS app launch earlier this month, allows mobile developers who use maps inside their apps to use Google Maps instead of Apple's implementation. ]]> <![CDATA[ProShares Launches First True Merger Arbitrage ETF]]> <![CDATA[Google Makes SDK Available For Its Native iOS Maps App So That Developers Can Bypass Apple’s]]> To go along with its brand new, built-from-scratch iOS Maps app, Google has released a new SDK which will allow developers to utilize its service within their own apps. The key is that the SDK allows access to a URL scheme that lets you call up the app from anywhere you like within your own. Say, you have a contact management app. If you surface a person’s address, you could choose to launch Google Maps by default, rather than Apple’s iOS 6 offering. Tonight, Senior Product Manager on Google Maps, Andrew Fost, wrote about it on the Google Geo Developers blog: The SDK features vector-based maps that load quickly, allowing users to easily navigate 2D and 3D views, rotating and tilting the map with simple gestures inside your app. Developers can also change the Google maps view to include information such as traffic conditions, and control camera positions in 3D. Access to API keys is being progressively rolled out to developers who register interest. Yes, along with calling up the app, it can be fully woven in, so if you have developed an app like Foursquare, you could choose to use all of Google’s real-time data, information and graphics. Tapping a routing button within any type of app can fire off Google Maps: The SDK documentation, along with URL scheme instructions are available on Google’s Developer site now. Sadly, developers will have to register for API access, which means that there’s no telling how long it will take to see our first apps with Google Maps woven in. Of course, it’ll be after that Apple App Store “Holiday Freeze”, so look for them in the new year. Choice is good for developers, but most importantly, for consumers.
