Huntington, fresh off its initial foray into the ETF industry in June, has doubled the size of its lineup with the launch of an actively managed ETF that will implement a sector rotation strategy. The new U.S. Equity Rotation Strategy ETF (HUSE) will invest in U.S. that are included in the S&P Composite 1500, with the flexibility to over- or under-weight certain industry sectors depending on which the managers believe to have the greatest or least potential for capital appreciation given the current market environment. The idea behind the new ETF is relatively straightforward; the managers will seek to identify the most promising and least promising sectors, and tilt the portfolio accordingly. In many environments, the difference between the best and worst performing environments can be substantial. So far in 2012, the Technology SPDR (XLK) is up about 12% while the Energy SPDR (XLE) is in negative territory. [For updates on [...]

June 2012 ETF Roundup: Launches, Filings, And Closures

June saw yet another period of strong growth in the ETF lineup, with multiple issuers rolling out new products over the past several weeks. While the pace has certainly slowed from the winter months, there is no shortage of new activity in the space, including a number of first-to-market products that are now hitting the market. Last month saw the continuation of a trend from the first five months of the year: growth in fixed income funds. Several issuers launched new bond ETFs last month, continuing to build out that part of the product lineup. Among the new additions are a “crossover” corporate bond ETF and another emerging markets corporate bond fund. The commodity front is also quite active; during the past few weeks we’ve seen the launches of ETFs focused on oil sands, MLPs, and metals, as well as a broad-based fund from a financial giant making the leap [...]

This Week In ETFs: June 24th Edition

As we come to the end of yet another tumultuous week in the stock market, one can only wonder if stability is in our sights. Negative news from the Philly Fed’s index of regional manufacturing combined with jobless claims and a fall in existing-home sales painted a bleak picture Thursday morning. Accordingly, the stock market suffered its second-worst loss of the year as the markets came to a close Thursday afternoon. Without the Fed signaling QE3 anytime soon, investors may be in for a tougher summer than expected. The eurozone continues to be under close watch as leaders prepare for a summit this upcoming week. Friday offered some relief to U.S. markets as the Dow Jones and S&P rose 71 and 10 points respectively; Bank and Healthcare shares lead the market rebound. Huntington Jumps Into ETF Game With “EcoLogical” ETF

Huntington, a Columbus-based bank, made the jump into the ETF industry this week with the debut of an actively-managed ETF that will hold a portfolio of ecologically-focused companies. The new Huntington EcoLogical Strategy ETF (HECO) will target companies that “have positioned their business to respond to increased environmental legislation, cultural shifts towards environmentally conscious consumption, and capital investments in environmentally oriented projects.” Under the Hood HECO will maintain a portfolio covering a wide range of sectors, as opposed to being limited exclusively to “cleantech” type stocks. Rather, the strategy will seek to identify companies that demonstrate environmental stewardship, and provide products and services that advance green practices and show evidence of sustainability. But the manager will not focus solely on identifying stocks with positive environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors; it will also seek to pick out stocks that are positioned to benefit from changing laws, regulations and consumer behavior [...]
