UCO, FINU: Big ETF Outflows

Turning today to week-over-week shares outstanding changes among the universe of ETFs covered at ETF Channel, the largest outflow was seen in the Proshares Ultra DJ-UBS Crude Oil (UCO), which shed 1.9 million shares, or a 14.2% decrease week over week. And on a percentage change basis, the ETF with the largest outflow was the Proshares UltraPro Financials (FINU), which lost 50,000 of its shares, for a whopping 50.0% decline in outstanding shares.

Looking today at week-over-week shares outstanding changes among the universe of ETFs covered at ETF Channel, the largest inflow was seen in the Gold Miners ETF (GDX), which added 8.1 million shares, or a 4.1% increase week over week. Among the largest underlying components of GDX, in morning trading today Goldcorp (GG) is up about 3%, and Barrick Gold (ABX) is higher by about 2.8%.

Turning today to week-over-week shares outstanding changes among the universe of ETFs covered at ETF Channel, the largest outflow was seen in the PowerShares QQQ (QQQ), which shed 17,950,000 shares, or a 3.6% decrease week over week. Among the largest underlying components of QQQ, in morning trading today Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) is off about 0.3%, and Google Incorporated Class A (GOOG) is lower by about 0.8%.

July proved to be yet another eventful month as multiple ETF issuers wasted no time in rolling out over ten new products in the past several weeks. Though usually a slower season in regards to product development, this summer has had no shortage of new activity. Investors now have more options than ever as issuers continue to seek out new and innovative product offerings. Though July was another up/down month in the global stock markets, the ETP industry showed strength through its continued growth. This past month’s launches are a diversified mix of exchange-traded products including equities, fixed income and currency offerings. ProShares Adds 3x, -3x Financials ETFs

ProShares added a pair of products designed for investors looking to bet on the short term performance of the often volatile financial sector today. Two new ETFs, the ProShares UltraPro Financials (FINU) and ProShares UltraPro Short Financials (FINZ) will offer 300% daily leveraged exposure to the Dow Jones U.S. Financials Index, a benchmark that consists of large banking institutions. The iShares Dow Jones U.S. Financial Sector Index Fund (IYF) offers non-leveraged exposure to that benchmark. IYF, which is up about 11% so far in 2012, makes its largest individual allocations to Wells Fargo, JP Morgan, and Berkshire Hathaway. The financial sector has continued to exhibit significant volatility in 2012, creating potentially attractive opportunities for active traders looking to profit from short term swings in either direction.
