European stock markets opened higher on Thursday, with banks and energy companies leading the gainers as investors awaited the German ZEW index and a Spanish bond auction. The Stoxx Europe 600 index was slightly higher at 256.84, but shares of Alcatel-Lucent SA sank 12% after a profit warning. The French CAC 40 index rose 0.2% to 3,187.57. The German DAX 30 index rose 0.5% to 6,595.62, led by a more than 1% rise for Volkswagen AG . The FTSE 100 index was flat at 5,664.75, with Rio Tinto PLC off more than 1% after posting a record profit, but offering a cautious outlook.
