Mixed Close, Poor Technicals
The stock market indices ended mixed, but it was a wild ride. They surged at the opening, reached declining topslines from the last several sessions, and then came down hard in a 5-wave decline to new lows for the entire decline, reaching the bottom of the channel on both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100. At that point, they rallied back in a multi-month surge that took the NDX from 2637 to 2676, nearly 40 points straight up. The S&P 500 ran a little more choppily, but went from 1403 to 1417, a 14-point gain. In the last half hour they came down hard, but bounced just before the close, and in the last 5 minutes they snapped back. Basically, they pulled back in the last half hour to finish mixed on the session. Net on the day, the Dow closed up 3.53 at 13,107.21, about 67 points off the low and 55 points off the high. The S&P 500 was down 1.03 at 1411.94, 8 points off the low and 6 points off the high, also midrange. The Nasdaq 100 was up 2.11 at 2655.83, 30 points off the low and 10 points off the high. It was a mixed session but technicals were lousy. Advance-declines were 17 to 12 negative on the New York Stock Exchange, and 14 to 10 negative on Nasdaq. Up/down volume was 2 1/2 to 1 negative on New York, with total volume of about 700 million shares. Nasdaq traded 1 3/4 billion shares and had a slight plurality of 9 to 8. In addition, Nationstar Mortgage Holdings Inc. (NSM) was up 2.11 to 34.23, and Sears Holdings Corporation (SHLD) advanced 3.77 to 66.69. Stepping back and reviewing the hourly chart patterns, the indices were up early, but then fell down hard into midday, or late afternoon, when they bottomed out. They rallied back to take back all of the losses, and then some, but pulled back into the close to close mixed on the session to finish the week out in funky fashion. Good Trading! Harry
