Vancouver startup Mushboo wins 2nd in business competition for growing food on waste coffee

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Vancouver, BC (PRBuzz.com) December 7, 2012 -- Mushboo, a Vancouver social enterprise with a passion for reducing the waste within the city, runs a coffee recycling service for many of your favorite local cafes. Running on a weekly basis the company started a 6 month pilot to recover the waste coffee grounds. While the pilot only covered 7 Vancouver coffee shops the company recovered over 13,000kgs of waste coffee grounds creating a 18 ton eCO2 reduction, with 2 guys and a third silent partner, Zipcar truck "Todd".

What happens to your coffee grounds once the Mushboo boys get their hands on it? They use the coffee grounds as a growing medium for gourmet mushrooms.

"A large amount of the materials we send to landfills every day are undervalued. As many green thumbs know coffee grounds is just one example of this. We created a turn-key system for coffee shops to recycle this waste giving them an easy way to make a positive way for each business to lower it's environmental impact," said Matthew Unger.

The company presented their business last week during a business competition on Granville Island taking 2nd place. Generating revenue through coffee pickups Mushboo home garden and fresh mushroom sales the company eliminates their waste, now a nutrient rich soil conditioner, by providing it to local school gardens, urban farms and community gardens. Wowing both the contest judges and the audience with what appears to be an excellent business model for green business in Vancouver the company is now in the running to be Small Business BC's Best Green Business for 2013.

"What I love about your business model is it is completely closed loop, you have found a way to make your own waste valuable through every stage of your operations," said the contest Judge Lisa Helps of Community Micro Lending.

"We spent a lot of time, trial and error to create our current process and plan to compete against commercial mushroom farms that import their product into the city. The design of the Mushboo growing system makes it easy for our customers to take part in the fun. At only 5 minutes of work per harvest all they do is add water and wait 3 weeks," said Matthew Unger

Mushboo sells their mushrooms directly to consumers through their website, mushboo.com, as refill cartridges for their trendy countertop mushroom gardens. Each garden is hand-crafted in house from bamboo and ceramics. Operating out of a tiny 250 square foot growing space in Kitsilano Mushboo is now in the process of moving into a larger facility in the heart of Vancouver's Gastown foody-driven district to expand their production capacity and add more species of gourmet mushrooms for resale and for use in their Mushboo gardens.

The Mushboo garden is designed to grow mushrooms on your kitchen counter by just adding water to the red clay bowl at the top.
