National Cheng Kung University’s Department of Life Sciences recently organized a “Genomics and Bioinformatics” seminar in which scholars and experts from Japan, the Philippines, India and Vietnam gathered for the 5-day course focusing on the Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS).
The course was based on the Memorandum of Understanding signed between NCKU and Fujitsu earlier this year under which both parties agreed to work together in the research and development of algorithmic biology, training of talents in bioinformatics and the development of bioinformatics-related software.
The first course jointly organized by NCKU and Fujitsu was officially launched on Dec. 3, when lessons for “Genomics and Bioinformatics” during the spring semester began.
Japan’s National Institute of Genetics (NIG) Deputy Director and also NCKU’s Visiting Distinguished Chair Professor Takashi Gojobori said that this course is open to all scholars in the field and he invited students from other fields to attend this course too.
He added that NGS has led the genomics and bioinformatics research towards a brand new level, bringing in brand new ideas to the field. Using human genome as an example, he noted that biologists had to spend 12 years to piece together sequencing information of 46 chromosomes. Now, based on today’s technology, this process can be completed in less than a day.
Gojobori said that in the research of genomics and bioinformatics, NCKU has taken a huge leap. He hoped that in addition to leading the country’s research in genomics and bioinformatics, NCKU can attract scholars from countries like South Korea, Hong Kong, China and other Asian countries to cooperate in research and development.
Fujitsu Taiwan’s business consultant Takeda Haruhito expressed his sincere gratitude to NCKU for organizing this seminar. He said that both Japan and Taiwan are currently facing problems such as aging population and low birth rates. Hence, Fujitsu and NCKU have begun to explore co-operation in the biomedical and other related areas since last year.
On behalf of Fujitsu, Haruhito said that they felt honored to establish co-operation with NCKU, adding that they would try their best to help NCKU and make contributions to the research of biomedicine and genomics.
