Microsoft released an app on their Facebook Malware Protection Center page earlier this week aimed at helping Windows users identify rogue security software, also known as “scareware”. For those of you not familiar with rogue software, it often comes in the form of a fake antivirus program that appears to be beneficial from a security perspective, but provides limited or no security, generates erroneous or misleading alerts, or attempts to lure users into participating in fraudulent transactions.
The landing page for Real vs. Rogue asks: “Can you tell the difference between real antivirus software and an actual virus?” and invites users to test their skills identifying rogue software. As you move through the questions, security tips and warnings are provided to help you understand the risks involved with installing rogue security software.
Think you have what it takes to fend off rogue security software? Head over to the app and find out!
