A 19-year-old college student died Wednesday morning at his Conway, South Carolina university when a gunman shot him. The shooter fled the campus and remains at large. A statewide manhunt has been launched.
Authorities identified the victim as Coastal Carolina University sophomore Anthony Darnell Liddell of Bennettsville, South Carolina. Liddell died after 7:30 a.m. inside University Place residence hall, a dormitory that is home to nearly 2,000 students. The gunman fled the scene in a car. It is unclear if he is also a student of Coastal Carolina.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear. Authorities have not identified the shooter or released a description of him. South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry said police plan to release a description soon.
Coastal Carolina University, which is located about 15 miles northwest of Myrtle Beach, was put on lock down after the attack. School officials say classes will not be canceled. Counselors will be on hand for students.
