Biopharmaceutical company, Pfizer Inc. (PFE) reported on Tuesday that it has increased warning for azithromycin.
The Food and Drug Administration reported that PFE has added risks to the label of its antibiotic, azithromycin. Studies done on the drug showed that patients who use the drug have an increased risk for cardiovascular death. The risk from using the drug is increase among those who have heart problems.
A spokesperson for PFE said that most patients who use the drug will not be affect by the label change, saying that the drug “has had a well established benefit risk profile for more than 20 years and continues to be an effective treatment option for patients all over the globe suffering from many types of bacterial infections.”
Pfizer shares were mostly flat during premarket trading Wednesday. The stock has increased 30% in the past year.
