Johnny Depp: America a 'dumb puppy'

The United States is a "dumb puppy that has big teeth," according to American actor Johnny Depp.

The 40-year-old actor, who spends much of his time in the south of France, told the German magazine Stern that in the present political climate he expects to spend as little time as possible at his Los Angeles residence, the Associated Press reported.

"America is dumb, is something like a dumb puppy that has big teeth – that can bite and hurt you, aggressive," Depp said in the interview published today.

The star of the film "Pirates of the Caribbean" lives with French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis and their two children.

"My daughter is four, my boy is one. I'd like them to see America as a toy, a broken toy. Investigate it a little, check it out, get this feeling and then get out," Depp told Stern.

He ridiculed the House cafeteria on Capitol Hill for renaming French fries "Freedom" fries in response to France's refusal to support the U.S. in the Iraq war.

"Nothing made me happier than when I read that – grown men and grown women in positions of power in the United States government," Depp said in the German interview. "I was ecstatic because they revealed themselves as idiots."

Depp is just the latest Hollywood actor to disparage the Bush administration while on foreign soil.

In an interview in Spain last month, actor Harrison Ford criticized the U.S. intervention in Iraq, saying "I regret what we as a country have done so far."
