RINO rampage

It's good to see that the left's favorite "moderate" Republicans – that would be the RINOs (Republican In Name Only) – have finally found a cause they can be passionate about. Unfortunately for the rest of us, that cause is yet another compromise with America's extremists to promote the RINOs' personal welfare (re-election).

The RINOs were lovingly stroked by the national press, which has never seen a political compromise it didn't like. That's because such "compromises" invariably end up giving the left's communist-pervert base most of what it wants, while the bill for these "services" is mailed to the majority at tax time.

There is something to be said for compromise when one is in the minority – just ask the jubilant Democrats. They have maintained the raised bar for the most important judicial confirmations from the simple majority required in the Constitution to the 60 percent level arbitrarily set in Senate filibuster rules. (And to filibuster, you don't even have to talk anymore.) They did so for agreeing to confirm Bush's judicial nominees the Senate would have confirmed anyway – had they had the constitutional prerogative of voting, that is.

And when the Democrats regain power (or when the RINOs are in desperate need of a few more strokes from the boys and girls in the Washington press corps) they can move the bar wherever they please. Thus, the Democratic minority has amended the Constitution without going through the untidy process of, well – amending the Constitution. Not bad for a minority whose shares shrank in the last election.

But what is there to be said for compromise when one's party is in the majority? Not only did the RINOs sell out their voters (yet again), their fellow Republican senators (yet again), they stabbed their leadership and president in the back (yet again). No wonder the press loves them (they don't actually, but we know what exceptionally good liars the national press corps are, so the RINOs probably believe it).

The simple fact is that as long as the Democrats own the federal judiciary, they have no real need for a Democrat in the White House, or a majority in Congress. With the Supreme Court now "broadening" its legal horizons to include considering the laws of African dictatorships and international courts in its decisions, why bother with the messiness of domestic politics? Simply legislate from the federal bench with life tenure. No accountability. No re-election to worry about. Just keep those "gentlemanly agreements" you made with NARAL (National Abortion Rights Action League), NAMBLA (North American Man-Boy Love Association) and the rest of the Democratic Party, and you're set for life. It's the perfect position from which to impose your vision on America.

The Republican leadership needs to exact a price from the RINOs. The highway bill might be a good place to trim some of the federal government's fat – especially in the RINOs' districts. When Senator "Me To" comes back home without the goodies, voters may decide it's time for a change. Might they elect a Democrat? There's always that chance. But culling the RINO herd by a member or two might just bring the rest of them back in line.
