Harriet Miers, President Bush's new nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court, donated money to Democratic politicians in the late '80s, Federal Election Commission records show.

According to FEC data, Miers has contributed a total of $14,770 to candidates and special-interest groups since 1987. Of that amount, $3,000 went to Democrats.

Miers' record shows that in November 1988, the nominee gave $1,000 to the DNC Services Corporation/Democratic National Committee. In February of that year, she donated $1,000 to then-Sen. Al Gore's presidential primary race. And in March 1987, Miers gave $1,000 to the primary campaign of Democrat Lloyd Bentsen, who went on to become Michael Dukakis' running mate in the 1988 presidential election.

Beginning in 1990, Miers' political giving all went to Republicans or special-interest groups, including two gifts of $2,000 to George W. Bush, one during each of his election cycles.

Other Republican donations went to Sens. Kay Bailey Hutchison, Pete Sessions and Phil Gramm.

According to the Drudge Report, former RNC Chairman Ed Gillespie admitted today that Miers was a Democrat througout the 1980s. Asked specifically about the Gore contribution, Gillespie said that she was a "conservative" Democrat who later became a Republican.
