Jorge Bush finally found a point of difference with his amigos in MALDEF, MAPA and LULAC.

In the face of poll numbers plummeting as a result of his illegal alien amnesty plans, he apparently decided to take a stand – albeit, a purely symbolic one – to shore up his right flank, which pretty much includes everyone besides Howard Dean, Al Gore and the Communist Party USA.

Asked whether the national anthem should be sung in English or Spanish, el presidente didn't miss a beat.

"I think the national anthem ought to be sung in English, and I think people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English and they ought to learn to sing the national anthem in English," he said without equivocation – at least for now.

(The press briefing took place Friday. There is a better-than-even chance el presidente has since "clarified" his remarks or backpedaled entirely if he lives up to form.)

"One of the important things here is that we not lose our national soul," he said.

The whole silly topic came up because a British music producer, Adam Kidron, released a version of the national anthem in Spanish – to honor America's immigrants, of course.

Bush's presidency has become a bad joke because of the issues of immigration enforcement and border security. He no doubt thought he could score a few cheap political points with some meaningless rhetoric about singing the national anthem in English. He must think Americans are really rubes!

Frankly, I couldn't care less if someone sings the national anthem in Spanish, Chinese or Tagalog. That's symbolism. And Bush would like Americans to be impressed with his symbolism over substance. Unfortunately for him and the nation, the substance is criminal neglect, treasonous misfeasance and arrogant defiance of his sworn duties under the Constitution.

No, I don't care whether someone sings the national anthem in Spanish. What I do care about is whether or not we still live in a country governed by the rule of law and the will of the people. What I do care about is whether or not terrorists are permitted to smuggle nuclear weapons into this country across a porous and unpatrolled border. What I do care about are the murders and rapes being perpetrated by those continuing to flood into the United States from Mexico.

Isn't it pathetic what has happened to Bush's presidency because of this issue? I get no satisfaction in being able to say, "I told you so." Because the tragedy is hardly just a political epitaph for the president and his party. It's a continuing nightmare that threatens the very survival of our nation.

When the nation's survival is at stake, my last worry is whether the anthem is going to be sung in English or Spanish.

I've told you before I believe we are on the verge of violence on this issue. When the government is unresponsive to the will of the people, frustrations and anger run high. And because Bush has so significantly raised the expectations of those here illegally – and still more on their way – anything short of blanket amnesty will disappoint millions of illegals.

This issue is so explosive, it has the potential to lead to civil war.

Yet, Jorge Bush remains so politically tone deaf to what is happening in this country that he really thinks we care who sings "The Star-Spangled Banner" and in which language it is sung.

"Jose, can you see?"

Jorge, can you hear the sound of hard-working American taxpayers getting ripped off?

Adios, mi amigo.
