At least six illegal aliens are hospitalized – one in critical condition – from severe burns after challenging the California wildfires in their crossing of the U.S.-Mexico border.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the six men, all believed to be from central and southern Mexico, were rescued by firefighters north of the shuttered Tecate port of entry and transported to UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest, Calif.

Alberto Lozano, a spokesman for the Mexican Consulate in San Diego, told the paper U.S. officials have asked the Mexican government to tell Mexican nationals not to cross in the fire zone, irrespective of anything human smugglers might say.

"We believe they are trying to convince them that even though there is a huge fire in front of them, that it is possible to cross without harm, which is impossible," Lozano said. "They will meet their death there."

The U.S. Border Patrol has reportedly arrested more than 200 people in the fire zone since Sunday, with many turning themselves in to agents or firefighters to be rescued.

Lauren Mack of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement denied rumors that immigration raids have occurred during this week's fire evacuations, and she told the Union-Tribune the agency has not been arresting fire evacuees.
